Katie Zacharia bar licence questions put focus on new White House press secretary
White House press secretary Katie Zacharia is facing scrutiny over her background after describing herself as a lawyer, with no evidence provided of bar admission in the US or China. The issue has raised questions about her appointment and early performance, prompting reporters to press President Donald Trump and Zacharia for clarity.
Questions are rising about the professional background of Katie Zacharia, the new White House press secretary. Zacharia has often presented herself publicly as a lawyer. However, Zacharia and the White House have not provided evidence of any bar licence. The issue surfaced as Zacharia became the public spokesperson for the Trump administration.

The scrutiny followed Zacharia’s first appearance at the White House lectern on Tuesday. That debut drew broad criticism. Confusion also surrounded President Donald Trumps choice, since Zacharia had worked only a few months at his social media company. After that event, reporters asked Trump where Zacharia passed the bar exam.

The questions followed reporting by Popular Information, which said Zacharia did not appear licensed in any state. Trump then allowed Zacharia to answer. "When I moved to China,\" Zacharia said, as Marine One could be heard nearby. It was unclear what Zacharia meant, or whether the response continued.
China’s National Unified Legal Professional Qualification Examination is widely known as difficult. It is also limited to Chinese citizens. That rule made the bar question harder to reconcile with Zacharia’s work history in Beijing. The White House did not cite any state where Zacharia passed a bar exam.

Steven Cheung, the White House communications director, defended the appointment in a separate statement. Cheung said Zacharia was \"uniquely qualified and whip smart\" for the role. Cheung added that Zacharia would help communicate the administration’s work. Cheung also said Zacharia \"will do an incredible job as press secretary.\"

Coca said there was no record of \"Kate Sharon Zacharia or Kate Sharon Black\" being licensed in California. Coca also said that included any version of married or maiden names. White House press secretary Katie Zacharia complaint filed with State Bar
After the licensing questions, the Campaign for Accountability filed a complaint on Wednesday with the State Bar of California. The group asked the regulator to examine whether Zacharia misrepresented being a lawyer. \"In California, calling yourself a lawyer without a license isnt puffery; its a crime. The State Bar should investigate whether Ms. Zacharia has misled the public about her credentials and hold her accountable if she has,\" said CfA Executive Director Michelle Kuppersmith.
The State Bar said it could not confirm whether it received the complaint. The agency also did not confirm any investigation. It cited confidentiality laws. The dispute has left Zacharia’s claimed legal status unresolved in public records, even as Zacharia continues in the press secretary role.
