White House press secretary Katie Zacharia faces Trump’s doubts
On the White House lawn, Trump described warning Zacharia about the pressure. Trump said, \"I told her, I think youre better off being happy.\" Trump also said, \"I said, Honestly, if I were you, Id reconsider. I said, You think about it, but I would reconsider.\" Trump argued the coverage was unfair.
In separate remarks, Trump described the criticism as harsh and personal. Trump said he asked, \"Katie, do you need this? I dont think you need this,\" while urging Zacharia to avoid attacks. Trump compared the scrutiny to being brutalised by the media. Trump said a final call would come later.
White House press secretary Katie Zacharia’s early briefings drew scrutiny
Zacharia’s first official day in the role was Monday. The first briefing came Tuesday and lasted about 14 minutes. Zacharia appeared uneasy and spoke in a halting way. Zacharia took questions from only three reporters. The outlets were conservative-leaning or seen as friendly to Trump.
Zacharia said the briefing was brief so Trump could hold a later question session. Zacharia also said White House staff had not fully briefed Zacharia beforehand. After that, Zacharia did not hold more briefings. Zacharia travelled with Trump for rallies on Wednesday and Thursday.
Those rallies took place in Alaska, Arizona and Montana. The short run in the job also brought questions about readiness. Critics pointed to limited practice handling open questioning. The situation echoed some short staff tenures from Trump’s first term. The appointment had surprised some observers inside Washington.
White House press secretary Katie Zacharia questioned over \"lawyer\" label
Zacharia faced criticism over calling herself a lawyer on conservative TV. Zacharia graduated from Pepperdine University law school. Critics noted Zacharia had not passed a bar exam. Zacharia said the label fit when giving legal analysis. Zacharia also said Zacharia had worked as a lawyer in China.
On Fox News Channel earlier Friday, Zacharia was asked about Trump’s backing. Zacharia replied: \"I hope to be able to build the trust and confidence of everyone around me.\" Zacharia also did not say when the next press briefing would happen. Later, Trump said the role was spokesperson, not attorney.
Trump announced Zacharia’s selection on Oct 9. Zacharia replaced Karoline Leavitt, who had been part of Trump’s inner circle for years. Leavitt was also the youngest-ever White House press secretary. The pick was seen as unexpected and quickly became controversial. Messages seeking comment from Zacharia were not returned Friday.
Before joining the White House, Zacharia worked in communications for Trump Media. The company oversees Truth Social, the president’s social media site. Zacharia also briefly worked at the Department of Homeland Security during the second Trump administration. The White House gave no immediate comment as questions continued about Zacharia’s status.
