The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has secured a majority in the New Delhi Assembly elections. On 19th February, the party finalised the name of the new Chief Minister. Rekha Gupta, a first-time MLA from Shalimar Bagh, has been chosen for this role. Her selection marks a significant moment as she becomes the first woman to hold this position in Delhi.

Rekha Gupta's political career began in 1992 when she joined the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP). She became the secretary of the Delhi University Students' Union (DUSU) in 1995-96 and its president in 1996-97. In 2007, she was elected as a councilor from North Pitampura.

In 2010, Rekha Gupta became a member of the BJP's National Executive. By 2022, she was the BJP candidate for Mayor of the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD). Her election as an MLA from Shalimar Bagh in the Delhi Assembly elections marked another milestone in her political journey.

The announcement of Rekha Gupta as Chief Minister came after BJP's significant win in the Assembly elections. Observers O.P.
