Why Is the Stock Market Falling Today? Sensex Drops 411 Points, Nifty Slips Below 22,600

A day after recovering in the benchmark indices, the stock market is again trading lower on Wednesday, October 14, as the crude oil prices surge higher.

At around 1:23 PM, the BSE Sensex was down 411 points, or 0.56%, at 72,622, while the NSE Nifty 50 declined 149 points, or 0.66%, to 22,573.

Stock Market

The weakness in today's market came after theTuesday's rally, when the Sensex surged 1,109 points, or 1.54%, to close at 73,033.78. The Nifty 50 gained 1.60% to settle at 22,721.95, supported by buying in IT stocks after HCL Technologies reported its September-quarter results.

Here are the reasons why the stock market is falling today:

Rising crude oil prices are one of the biggest concerns for the stock market in India on Wednesday. Brent crude climbed to $106.85 per barrel at the time of writing as the reports of escalating tensions between the US and Iran is keeping the energy markets

Apart from that, Foreign Institutional Investors (FIIs) were net sellers, offloading equities worth Rs. 1,305.13 crore in the previous session, as per BSE data. While Domestic Institutional Investors (DIIs) stepped in as buyers (purchasing Rs. 2,439.24 crore), constant foreign selling is creating overhead resistance.

Nifty 50 Top Gainers and Losers

As of today's trading session, Coal India became the top gainer among Nifty 50 stocks, rising 2.15% to Rs. 417.30 at 12 PM on October 14. TCS gained 1.89%, while the Nifty IT index advanced 1.3% in morning trade, extending the rally seen in the previous session after HCLTech's September-quarter results.

On the losing side, Shriram Finance fell nearly 3%, while Dr Reddy's Laboratories declined 1.9%. The Nifty Pharma index was the weakest sector in morning trade, while the Nifty PSU Bank index was among the worst-performing sectoral indices by the afternoon.

Stocks in Focus Outside the Nifty 50

Among stocks outside the Nifty 50, IDBI Bank surged 8.23% due to investor interest in its privatisation and a strong July-September business update.

Vedanta Power rallied 9.15%, rebounding after five consecutive sessions of losses. Meanwhile, PC Jeweller declined 1.49% despite announcing the early repayment of all its bank borrowings.

Sejal Glass hit the 20% upper circuit at Rs. 876, while German Green Steel and Power also featured among the upper-circuit stocks.

On the downside, Mold-Tek Technologies fell 5% to ₹104.89, and Take Solutions declined 4.98% to Rs. 11.46, hitting their respective lower circuits.

Market Movement Ahead

"A long bullish candle is visible on the daily chart, while a promising reversal pattern is visible on the intraday chart-both of which are largely positive signals. In our opinion, the 22,480/72,500 level would act as an important support level for traders. As long as the market continues to trade above this level, the decline is likely to continue. On the upside, the 22,850/73,500 level could act as an immediate resistance level for traders. A successful breakout above 22,850/73,500 could see the market move towards 23,000/74,000." said Shrikant Chouhan, Head Equity Research, Kotak Neo

"On the other hand, a break below 22,480/72,500 could put the bullish trend in jeopardy. If this happens, traders may consider exiting their long positions," he further added.
