Are Banks Open Or Closed On April 5?

As per RBI guidelines, banks are closed on the second and fourth Saturdays of each month, in addition to Sundays. Since April 5 falls on the first Saturday, regular banking operations will continue as usual in most parts of the country.

However, there is one notable exception - banks in Telangana will remain closed on April 5 to mark Babu Jagjivan Ram Jayanti, a regional holiday observed in the state.

Why Are Banks Closed In Telangana On April 5?

Babu Jagjivan Ram Jayanti, celebrated annually on April 5, commemorates the birth anniversary of Babu Jagjivan Ram, a prominent Indian freedom fighter, social reformer, and long-serving political leader. He served as India's Minister of Defence (1970-1974) and later as the Deputy Prime Minister (1977-1979). A strong advocate for the rights of marginalized communities, his legacy is honoured especially in Telangana and Andhra Pradesh, where the day is observed as a public holiday.

Payment systems which will be affected due to the holiday include Real Time Gross Settlement (RTGS), National Electronic Funds Transfer (NEFT), Cheque Clearing (through various Bankers' Clearing Houses, including the grid-based Cheque Truncation System - CTS).

Additionally, Electronic Clearing Service (ECS) suite, which includes ECS (Electronic Clearing Service), RECS (Regional Electronic Clearing Service), and NECS (National Electronic Clearing Service) will be affected as well.

Therefore, customers in Telangana are advised to plan their banking activities accordingly and complete essential transactions before or after the holiday.

RBI's Bank Holiday Guidelines

The Reserve Bank of India classifies bank holidays under three categories:

1. Holiday under the Negotiable Instruments Act
2. Holiday under the Negotiable Instruments Act and Real Time Gross Settlement (RTGS) Holiday
3. Banks' Closing of Accounts
Bank holidays vary by state and depend on regional festivals, local events, or official state notifications. Therefore, not all holidays are observed nationwide.
