Will Stock Market Be Open on Sunday, Feb 1 for Union Budget 2026? All You Need To Know About BSE, NSE Trading

On Wednesday the Cabinet Committee on Parliamentary Affairs (CCPA) is scheduled for the upcoming Budget Session of Parliament, according to sources. As per the parliamentary calendar, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman is set to present the Union Budget for 2026-27 on Sunday, February 1.

Since February 1 falls on a Sunday, it is a matter of confusion whether the stock market will break convention and open on a Sunday. According to reports circulating across several news portals, the National Stock Exchange (NSE) is considering the option of opening equity markets on Sunday, February 1st. However, the exchange has not taken any final decision yet, and the proposal is currently under internal review.

Stock Market Open on February 1

While the equity market in India is normally closed on Saturdays and Sundays, it won't be the first time that the markets will be open on a non-trading day.

In the past, the stock exchange remained operational when the Union Budget was presented on a weekend or public holiday. Both the Budget 2015 & Budget 2026 fell on a Saturday, and the market remained open that day.

Keeping markets open on Budget Day helps in price discovery to manage volatility and avoid pent-up reactions when trading resumes after a holiday.

What about BSE?

So far, the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE) has not issued any statement on whether it plans to open equity markets on February 1. Any move to open markets on a Sunday would typically require coordination between both major exchanges for smooth functioning during trades.

Budget Day traditions

Traditionally, the Union Budget is presented after the release of the Economic Survey, followed by a media briefing from the Chief Economic Advisor V. Anantha Nageswaran and senior government officials. Budget Day usually observes high volatility in the stock market, especially in sectors sensitive to taxation, spending and reform announcements.

No official confirmation yet

For now, both BSE and NSE remain officially closed on weekends, and no circular has been issued confirming Sunday trading on February 1, 2026. The proposal is still under consideration, and people are advised to wait for an official announcement from both BSE & NSE.
