The onset of winter brings a bone-chilling embrace across northern India, with temperatures plummeting below zero degrees Celsius in multiple regions. As the cold intensifies, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued alerts of dense fog blanketing northern states, including Punjab, Haryana, and parts of Uttar Pradesh on December 14 and 15. Similar warnings have been extended to Tripura, adding to the cautionary measures for residents and commuters.
In contrast, the IMD forecasts light to moderate rainfall in Tamil Nadu and Kerala, accompanied by isolated thunderstorms and lightning between December 15 and 17. Anticipate isolated heavy rainfall over specific pockets of south Tamil Nadu on December 16 and 17, followed by Kerala on December 17, prompting locals to brace for wetter conditions.

While the south braces for rain, the north grapples with cold temperatures. New Delhi, the nation's capital, faces a dip as the minimum temperature is predicted to plunge to 6 degrees Celsius. Residents woke up to a chilly morning with temperatures hovering around 10 degrees Celsius, a stark contrast to Mumbai's comfortable 25 degrees Celsius.
The Regional Weather Forecasting Centre (RWFC) forecasts New Delhi's minimum temperature to remain in the range of 6-8 degrees Celsius over the upcoming days. Meanwhile, the maximum temperature in the capital is expected to reach 24 degrees Celsius, indicating a considerable temperature gap between day and night.
The IMD emphasizes that there won't be a significant change in minimum temperatures across most parts of the country in the coming 4-5 days. This prediction prompts the need for continued vigilance and preparation for the prevailing weather conditions.
The contrasting weather patterns in different regions of India showcase the diverse climatic nuances prevalent across the nation. While the north grapples with freezing temperatures and fog, the south gears up for rainfall and thunderstorms, highlighting the seasonal variations that mark India's geographical expanse.
Residents in affected areas are advised to stay updated with weather forecasts and take necessary precautions to navigate through these climatic fluctuations as winter takes its firm grip across the nation.
