Hungary-based Wizz Air is setting its sights on the Indian skies, aiming to bridge European cities with Indian destinations at competitive prices. The ultra-low-cost carrier, with over two decades of aviation experience, is currently in talks with both Indian and European regulators to kickstart its operations. Wizz Air's CEO, Jozsef Varadi, highlighted the high cost of air travel between Europe and India as a significant barrier for the Indian diaspora, a challenge the airline is eager to address.

With the introduction of A321 XLR aircraft into its fleet from early next year, Wizz Air plans to offer non-stop services capable of covering the distance between the two regions in approximately eight to eight-and-a-half hours. Varadi revealed that the airline is negotiating with governments and regulatory bodies to ensure smooth initiation of services, aiming for an average one-way fare of around 200 euros (over Rs 18,000), with possibilities of even lower fares dipping below 100 euros.
Subject to obtaining necessary regulatory approvals, Wizz Air anticipates commencing its India operations in the next financial year. The carrier aims to connect six or seven major European cities with key airports across India, enhancing international traffic flow which has seen an uptick in recent times. Currently, Wizz Air boasts a network spanning more than 190 airports in over 50 countries, operating more than 750 routes.
Varadi also mentioned that Wizz Air has been designated as a carrier from Italy, Austria, and Hungary, and discussions are underway with Indian authorities for recognition and approval of these designations. The airline's fleet comprises 210 Airbus A320 and A321 aircraft, with plans to expand its A321 XLR fleet to 48 in the coming years.
As a point-to-point carrier listed on the London Stock Exchange, Wizz Air believes it can offer valuable services without exerting pressure on India's domestic aviation industry. This statement was made during Varadi's attendance at the CAPA India Aviation Summit 2024 in New Delhi.
Wizz Air operates under four airline ventures: Wizz Air Hungary Ltd, Wizz Air UK Ltd, Wizz Air Malta Ltd, and Wizz Air Abu Dhabi LLC. The CEO expressed a keen interest in expanding operations from Abu Dhabi to India as well. Additionally, Wizz Air is investing in Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) production companies, underscoring its commitment to environmentally sustainable aviation practices.
The airline's approach towards affordable travel coupled with its strategic expansion plans could significantly impact air travel between Europe and India, offering more choices and competitive pricing for passengers. As discussions progress and regulatory approvals are sought, the anticipation for Wizz Air's entry into the Indian market continues to grow.
