From Dusk Till Dawn: Women’s Rising Role In India’s E-commerce Night Shifts

In a significant move towards enhancing diversity within the workforce, India's leading e-commerce and delivery giants, including Flipkart, Zomato, and Amazon, have initiated steps to incorporate more women into night shift roles. This initiative, particularly focused on the blue-collar segment, aims to balance gender representation and tap into the untapped potential of the female workforce.

Efforts to Boost Women's Participation

Flipkart has been proactive in this endeavour, starting to recruit women for night shifts in its fulfilment and sortation centres in Haryana since September 2023. Similarly, Amazon India's Women in Night Shifts (WINS) initiative marks a significant stride towards this goal, with implementation already underway at one of its sorting centres in Haryana. These efforts are not limited to a single state but are part of a broader strategy to include women in night shifts across various locations in India.

Projected Growth in Women's Workforce

The current participation of women in the workforce of e-commerce companies stands at an estimated 10%, as per CIEL HR Services. This figure, however, is expected to see a sharp increase. "We estimate the size of the women workforce in this industry to grow by 25% in 2024," stated Aditya Mishra, Chief Executive of CIEL HR Services. This anticipated growth underscores the sector's commitment to fostering an inclusive work environment.

Challenges and Measures for a Safer Work Environment

Despite the progressive steps, challenges such as social norms, transportation, and safety concerns for women working at night persist. To counter these issues, e-commerce and delivery firms have instituted a range of measures aimed at creating a conducive and safe workplace. These measures include extensive training programmes covering various aspects such as road safety, fire safety, self-defence, prevention of sexual harassment (POSH), and gender sensitisation. Additionally, provisions for safe transport, adequate physical infrastructure, and facilities like night canteens, coupled with constant monitoring through CCTVs, are being implemented.

Rising Employment and Economic Opportunities

The employment landscape in the e-commerce and logistics sector, excluding riders, is expansive, with an estimated workforce of around 500,000 people, according to Teamlease Services. The gig economy, in particular, has witnessed a notable surge in women's employment, with an over 40% increase in 2023 compared to 2022. "The night economy is opening, and that holds true for multiple sectors," observed Anjalli Ravi Kumar, Chief Sustainability Officer at Zomato. Zomato itself boasts over 2,000 female delivery partners across India, with a significant number opting for night shifts, especially in the southern regions.

Corporate Perspectives on Women in Night Shifts

Highlighting Flipkart's stance on the matter, Prajakta Kanaglekar, Vice President, Supply Chain and Customer Experience at Flipkart, shared insights into the company's workforce dynamics. "Today, we have more than 800 women working in night shifts across various locations in Haryana," she remarked. This indicates a robust participation of women in the supply chain, including last-mile delivery roles, with women constituting close to 30% of Flipkart's supply chain workforce.

The initiative by these e-commerce and delivery companies to incorporate more women into their night shift workforce not only aims to enhance diversity but also to leverage the untapped potential of women in the blue-collar job sector. By addressing the challenges head-on and implementing comprehensive safety measures, these companies are setting a precedent for others in the industry. As the night economy continues to expand, the inclusion of women in these roles will likely contribute significantly to the sector's growth and dynamism.
