Samsung Workers Conclude Over a Month-Long Strike at Tamil Nadu Facility After Negotiations

Samsung's Tamil Nadu plant strike has ended after 37 days. Extensive talks between workers, the state government, and company management led to this resolution. The Tamil Nadu government announced that Samsung agreed to several welfare measures for the employees.

The decision to end the strike was made during a conciliatory meeting at the Department of Labour Welfare in Chennai. Representatives from Samsung India and the striking workers participated. The workers agreed to return to work immediately, and Samsung assured no disciplinary action against those who joined the strike.

A Samsung India spokesperson expressed gratitude towards the Centre of Indian Trade Unions (CITU) for calling off the strike. "Samsung India welcomes CITU's decision to call off the illegal strike. We thank the government of Tamil Nadu for its support and welcome our workers who have decided to return to work unconditionally. We will not take action against workers who merely participated in the illegal strike," said the spokesperson.

Samsung has committed to filing a written response to the workers' charter of demands with the conciliation officer. Both parties have agreed on this approach. The company had already accepted most demands from the striking workers, led by CITU, except for recognising their union.

Background and Impact

Since September 9, around 1,100 out of 1,750 employees at Samsung India were on strike. They demanded wage revisions, improved working conditions, and official recognition of their newly-formed union by the labour department. The strike affected production at Samsung's facility near Chennai, which contributes significantly to its revenue.

The Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M K Stalin had directed several ministers to engage in discussions with Samsung India and the protesting workers. This intervention aimed to resolve issues amicably and ensure smooth operations at the plant.

Company Operations

Samsung's Chennai facility manufactures consumer electronics like refrigerators, TVs, and washing machines. This plant accounts for nearly one-fifth of Samsung's revenue, which reached Rs 96,628.90 crore (approximately USD 12 billion) in FY23.

In addition to its Chennai plant, Samsung India operates a smartphone manufacturing unit in Noida, Uttar Pradesh. This diversification helps maintain its strong market presence across various product categories.
