With the successful conclusion of the World Coffee Conference-2023 held in Bengaluru, India's position as a producer of high quality, sustainable coffee is set to gain global recognition. CEO of Coffee Board of India, K G Jagadeesha expressed optimism about this development during a press conference on Thursday.
India's Unique Position in Global Coffee Production

Jagadeesha highlighted that Indian coffees are unique and unparalleled in their quality and sustainability. He stated, "If you look at Indian coffees, we are the ones who grow coffee under shade. Our coffees are the most sustainable ones because we create forests to grow them." This method not only produces superior beans but also contributes significantly to environmental conservation.
The Unmatched Quality of Indian Coffees
In terms of quality, Jagadeesha confidently claimed that no other country could compete with India's offerings. "Nobody can compete with Indian Robusta," he asserted. Furthermore, he drew parallels between Indian Arabica and its Colombian counterparts - both renowned for their taste worldwide.
Lack of Recognition for Indian Coffees
Despite these strengths, Jagadeesha lamented that Indian coffee had not yet received its due recognition on international platforms until now. He questioned why despite producing world-class beans, they remain relatively unknown in European cafes and markets compared to those from other countries.
The World Coffee Conference: A Platform for Change
The four-day World Coffee Conference hosted participants from over 80 countries and featured 45 sessions where 127 speakers addressed various aspects related to the industry. Out of these speakers, 80 were international while 47 were national representatives.
This event provided an excellent platform for highlighting the merits of Indian coffee production practices and products before a global audience. It is expected that the discussions and interactions at this conference will pave the way for Indian coffee to gain greater visibility and acceptance in international markets.
