The first-ever Women's Premier League (WPL) mega auction is gearing up for a thrilling Thursday in New Delhi, with 277 players including 194 Indians and 83 overseas talents - set to go under the hammer as franchises compete for 73 open slots. Among the most anticipated names are India's recent World Cup heroes Deepti Sharma, Kranti Gaud, and Shree Charani, all of whom are expected to spark intense bidding wars after their standout performances in the title-winning campaign earlier this month.

Gujarat Giants and UP Warriorz made the most striking decisions on retention day. Gujarat parted ways with Laura Wolvaardt despite her stellar World Cup campaign, and with only two overseas retention slots available, they chose to hold on to Australians Beth Mooney and Ashleigh Gardner.

UP Warriorz, meanwhile, opted for a full reset, retaining just one player. The exclusions of India's premier allrounder Deepti Sharma and Australia's captain Alyssa Healy were among the biggest surprises.

As expected, the marquee Indian names Harmanpreet Kaur, Smriti Mandhana, Shafali Verma, Richa Ghosh, and Jemimah Rodrigues were all retained by their respective franchises.

In other notable moves, Delhi Capitals released their captain Meg Lanning after leading the team to three consecutive finals, instead retaining Jemimah Rodrigues, Shafali Verma, Marizanne Kapp, Annabel Sutherland, and Niki Prasad.

Mumbai Indians continued to back young talent G. Kamalini and chose to retain Nat Sciver Brunt at a higher price than their skipper Harmanpreet Kaur, reinforcing their commitment to a stable and balanced core.

UP Warriorz Retained and Released Players

UP Warriorz have chosen to retain one Indian player while letting go of all overseas players ahead of the auction. With a substantial purse of Rs 14.50 crore, the highest among all teams listed, UP Warriorz used their Right to Match (RTM) card to bring back Deepti Sharma for Rs 3.2 crore, reaffirming her status as a top-tier allrounder.

The franchise further strengthened its spin attack by signing Sophie Ecclestone for Rs 85 lakh. In another major buy, UPW secured former Delhi Capitals skipper Meg Lanning for Rs 1.90 crore.
