You Can Make UPI Payments Via WhatsApp From Today
After the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) has allowed the widely used messaging app WhatsApp to go live on UPI, WhatsApp in a blog post said, "Starting today, people across India will be able to send money through WhatsApp". Besides it said for making payment via WhatsApp one needs to have a bank account as well as a debit card.
On Thursday night, NPCI allowed WhatsApp to 'Go Live' on UPI in the multi-bank model. Currently for the service, WhatsApp has collaborated with 5 banks namely ICICI Bank, HDFC Bank, Axis Bank, the State Bank of India, and Jio Payments Bank.
"People can send money on WhatsApp to anyone using a UPI supported app,"it said, adding that the service is now available for people on the latest version of the iPhone and Android app.
Also, the payments system over WhatsApp has been devised incorporating a strong set of privacy and security principles that includes keying in a personal UPI PIN for executing each of the payment transaction. "Payments is available now in ten Indian regional language versions of WhatsApp", said Mark Zuckerberg. In a video statement, he further stated that the WhatsApp payment will be supported by over 140 banks."All you need is a debit card with a bank that supports UPI and you can set it up straight away. You can find it in the latest version of WhatsApp," he said.
Besides there shall be no fees for transfer of funds via WhatsApp.
