Zohran Mamdani, a political adversary of former US President Donald Trump, has won the New York City mayoral election. He defeated Andrew Cuomo, a former governor, and Curtis Sliwa, a Republican candidate. At 34, Mamdani becomes the city's youngest and first Muslim mayor. He will succeed Eric Adams, who withdrew from re-election in September but remained on the ballot.

Mamdani expressed willingness to collaborate with Trump for New Yorkers' benefit but refused to be intimidated. In an interview with The Good Liars, he said he would oppose any actions making life harder for New Yorkers: "If you want to make life more difficult for New Yorkers," he said, "then I'll be there to fight you."

Despite Trump's endorsement of Cuomo for mayoral office, Mamdani emerged victorious. Trump had written that electing Mamdani would mean minimal federal funding for New York City due to his political stance: "If Communist Candidate Zohran Mamdani wins...it is highly unlikely that I will be contributing Federal Funds...because of the fact that...this once great City has ZERO chance of success."
