Zomato CEO Deepinder Goyal Calls For 'Humane Treatment' Of Delivery Partners At Malls; Reddit Reacts

Zomato's CEO, Deepinder Goyal, made headlines this Sunday after sharing his personal experience working as a delivery executive for the food tech giant. Goyal, along with his wife, Gia Goyal (formerly Grecia Munoz), donned the role of delivery partners in Gurugram to gain firsthand insights into the challenges faced by the delivery workforce. This unusual move has sparked conversations about the treatment of gig workers in India.

Taking to social media, Goyal shared his experience, specifically highlighting the hurdles he encountered while picking up an order from Haldiram's at Ambience Mall, Gurugram. In his post, he mentioned being directed to an alternate entrance where he was denied access to the mall's elevators and asked to use the stairs instead. "We reached Ambience Mall in Gurugram to pick up the order from Haldiram's. Was told to take the other entrance, and realised they are asking me to take the stairs," Goyal stated.

Goyal revealed that after climbing the stairs to the third floor, he realized delivery partners were not allowed inside the mall and were instead required to wait at the stairs to collect their orders. He added that he eventually managed to enter the mall to retrieve the order after the guard momentarily left his post.

Reflecting on his experience, Goyal expressed his concerns about the need for better treatment of delivery partners in malls. "We need to work with malls more closely to improve working conditions for all delivery partners. And malls also need to be more humane to delivery partners," he wrote, urging mall authorities and stakeholders to reconsider their policies. The Zomato CEO also shared a video that documented the experience and called for feedback on how these working conditions could be improved.

While Goyal's initiative has garnered praise for highlighting the plight of delivery partners, not everyone is convinced. A Reddit post discussing Goyal's experience questioned whether this was a sincere effort or a clever public relations move. The post noted, "Zomato CEO Deepinder Goyal walks into Ambience Mall to pick up an order and boom... denied lift access!!" It added, "CEO going all 'aam aadmi' and picking up his own order... sounds a bit too perfect, doesn't it?"

Many social media users speculated that this could have been a calculated attempt to generate buzz around Zomato, as the post continues, "Suddenly, everyone is talking about Zomato like, Wow, even their CEO hustles!... Nice way to stay relevant, right?"
