SGB Early Redemption Price

As per RBI guidelines, the redemption price of Sovereign Gold Bonds is calculated based on the simple average of the closing price of 24 karat gold (999 purity) over the previous three business days.

Rbi in otis circular said , "For this tranche, the calculation has been derived using gold prices from April 15, April 16, and April 17, 2026, as published by the India Bullion and Jewellers Association (IBJA)."

Since gold prices have risen dramatically over the years, the redemption value of Rs. 15,254 per unit means strong returns for long-term investors who entered the scheme in October 2020 when the SBG issue price was Rs. 5052 per unit.

Investor To Get Over 200% Capital Gains

SGBs have been one of the most rewarding gold-linked investments in recent years.

If we look at the numbers the Issue price of this tranche in October 2020 was Rs. 5,051 per unit vs the current Redemption price of April 2026 at Rs. 15,254 per unit which comes to a capital appreciation of nearly 202%.

In addition, investors earned 2.5% annual interest, which adds roughly another 13-14% return over the holding period. So that means Total effective return comes to around 215%.

In simple terms, an investment of Rs. 1 lakh in 2020 would now be worth over Rs. 3 lakh, excluding the interest payouts already received during the tenure.
