The upcoming discussions are expected to play a key role in shaping the future pay structure for nearly 50 lakh central government employees and around 65 lakh pensioners, including retired defence personnel. After holding preliminary consultations in May with representatives from Delhi, Railways, Hyderabad and defence organisations, the commission is now expanding its outreach programme to different regions. The exercise is aimed at gathering feedback directly from employees, pensioners' associations and staff unions before drafting its final recommendations.

According to the proposed schedule, the commission will visit Srinagar in Jammu and Kashmir between June 1 and June 4 for meetings with local employee groups and stakeholders. A separate consultation is planned in Ladakh on June 8, where regional concerns linked to service conditions and allowances are expected to be discussed.

The panel will then travel to Lucknow on June 22 and 23 to interact with employee unions and representatives from various government departments in Uttar Pradesh. Another important round of meetings is scheduled in Bhubaneswar on July 6 and 7, where officials from central government establishments in Odisha are expected to participate.

8th Pay Commission Timeline: When Salary Hike May Arrive

The commission has also fixed May 31, 2026, as the final deadline for employees, associations and unions to submit their memorandums, demands and recommendations. Submissions made after the cut-off date are unlikely to be considered during the review process.

Although discussions are gathering pace, employees may still need to wait before the revised salary structure becomes reality. The commission, constituted in November 2025, is expected to submit its final report by February 2027 after completing consultations and financial assessments.

Following the submission, the Centre will examine the recommendations before taking a final decision on implementation. Officials and experts tracking the process believe the revised pay structure could begin rolling out between 2029 and 2030, depending on administrative approvals and budgetary planning.

What Employees and Pensioners Are Expecting

One of the biggest areas of focus remains the expected increase in basic pay, particularly amid persistent inflation and rising living expenses. Employee bodies are also expected to push for revisions in House Rent Allowance (HRA), transport allowance, medical reimbursements and other service-related benefits.

Pension reforms are likely to remain another major discussion point. Retired employees and pensioners' associations are seeking a simpler and more favourable pension structure, along with improved post-retirement benefits for senior citizens and defence veterans.

With consultations now entering a more active phase, the 8th Pay Commission process is set to gain significant attention over the coming months, especially among government employees awaiting clarity on future salary growth and pension revisions.
