8th Pay Commission Salary: From Rs.18,000 To Rs.69,000, How Much Salary Hike Can Central Govt Employees Expect
The 8th Pay Commission is one of the hottest topics of discussion among central government employees, pensioners across India. With the Union government formally constituting the 8th Central Pay Commission (8th CPC), nearly 1.16 crore central government employees and pensioners are now looking forward to every update related to the fitment factor, salary revision, arrears, Dearness Allowance (DA), and revised pay matrix.

What Is The Fitment Factor In The 8th Pay Commission?
The fitment factor is essentially a multiplier used by the Pay Commission to revise the existing basic salary of government employees. Instead of simply giving a flat percentage hike, the government uses this factor to rebuild the entire salary structure.
The biggest debate currently revolves around what fitment factor the government may finally approve.
The National Council-Joint Consultative Machinery (NC-JCM) has reportedly demanded a fitment factor of 3.83. If approved, the minimum basic salary could jump from Rs.18,000 to nearly Rs.69,000.
However, most financial analysts and experts believe the realistic fitment factor may remain between 2.28 and 3.00 due to fiscal pressure on the government.
For many employees, the difference between a fitment factor of 2.28 and 3.83 could mean lakhs of rupees in annual salary difference.
8th Pay Commission Salary Calculation Examples
The fitment factor will play a crucial role in deciding how much salary hike central government employees receive under the 8th Pay Commission.
The calculation method is straightforward: revised basic pay is obtained by multiplying the current basic salary with the approved fitment factor.
For instance, if an employee currently earns a basic pay of Rs.30,000 and the government approves a fitment factor of 2.28, the revised basic salary would rise to Rs.68,400.
However, if the government accepts the higher 3.83 fitment factor demand raised by employee unions, the salary jump would be far more significant.
or an employee currently drawing the minimum basic pay of Rs.18,000, a conservative fitment factor of 1.92x would increase the revised salary to Rs.34,560, while a 2.28x factor would raise it to Rs.41,040.
Under the 7th CPC parity estimate of 2.57x, the revised basic pay could become Rs.46,260, whereas the union-demanded 3.83x fitment factor could push the salary up to nearly Rs.68,940.
For employees in higher pay levels, the overall increase in salary, allowances, pension, and arrears could run into several lakhs annually.
The impact of the 8th Pay Commission will not be limited to just basic pay revision.
Several salary components including House Rent Allowance (HRA),Transport Allowance, Travel benefits, Pension calculations & Retirement benefits are directly linked to basic pay.
This means once the fitment factor increases the basic salary, overall gross salary and retirement benefits also rise significantly.
8th Pay Commission Latest Update
The 8th Pay Commission was officially constituted through a Gazette Notification issued on November 3, 2025, under the Narendra Modi-led Union Cabinet.
The commission is headed by Justice Ranjana Prakash Desai and currently remains in the consultation phase. Employee unions, pensioners' groups, and ministries are submitting their recommendations regarding salary revision, allowances, pensions, and fitment factors.
The deadline for submission of written memoranda has reportedly been extended till May 31, 2026.
As of now, the final recommendations of the 8th CPC are expected either in late 2026 or early 2027.
DA Merger Could Further Increase Salaries
Another important aspect is the merger of Dearness Allowance (DA) into basic pay. The government recently approved a 2% DA hike effective January 1, 2026. Once the 8th CPC is implemented, the accumulated DA will likely merge into the revised basic pay structure.
After the merger, DA calculations will restart from zero on the new salary base, potentially boosting future salary growth further.
