8th Pay Commission Salary Hike Update: At 2.86 Fitment Factor, Here's How Salary & Pensions Will Increase

8th Pay Commission: A major announcement in the 8th CPC is expected soon, as per the latest ministry reply to central government employees and pensions apex. The 8th Pay Commission is going to replace the current 7th Pay Commission, increasing salaries and pensions of over 1 crore employees, including pensioners. The implementation of the 8th Pay Commission is expected majorly in 2026; however, the possibility of delay is also on the cards.

8th Pay Commission Fitment Factor:

One of the biggest fitment factors that the majority of experts have predicted is 2.86 for 8th Pay Commission.

A fitment factor is important to decide the salaries and pensions. Currently, in 7th Pay Commission, the fitment factor is at 2.57.

When 7th CPC was implemented in 2016, due to the 2.57 fitment factor, the minimum salary rose to Rs 18,000 from Rs 7,000 of 6th Pay Commission. Also, minimum pension more than doubled to Rs 9,000 in 7th CPC compared to Rs 3,500 in 6th CPC.

Hence, the decision on fitment factor is pivotal.

According to Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, since 1947, seven Pay Commissions have been constituted, with the last one implemented in 2016. As the 7th Pay Commission's term concludes in 2026, initiating the process in 2025 ensures sufficient time to receive and review recommendations before its completion. He said this in January 2025, when Prime Minister Narendra Modi approved the implementation of 8th CPC.

8th Pay Commission Latest Update:

The Government Employees National Confederation (GENC), who is the apex body representing lakhs of Central and State Government employees, including those in Autonomous and Local Bodies, has recently written to Dr. Jitendra Singh, the Union Minister of State for Personnel, Public Grievances and Pensions.

As per the letter written, the apex body asked about the immediate constitutions of 8th Central Pay Commission CPC). Here's what the letter said:

The recommendations of the 7th CPC came into effect from 01.01.2016. As per established practice. Pay Commissions are constituted well in advance to ensure timely implementation. Delay in setting up the 8th CPC will adversely affect the timely pay revision due January 1, 2026.

Hence. the Government should immediately constitute the 8th CPC to examine and recommend revised pay structures, allowances, and pensionary benefits for Central Government employees and pensioners.

Reply: As per reports, the minister revealed GENC that they are actively in consultation with state governments and the constitution of 8th CPC.

The Prime Minister Narendra Modi-led government declared to implement the 8th Pay Commission in January this year. However, major decisions like terms of reference and appointment of members is pending.
