Bank Holiday 2025: All Banks Are Shut On August 15; What Is Open & Closed On Independence Day?

All banks in India are closed on August 15 due to the celebration of the 79th Independence Day, which is a national holiday. This also means that not just banks, but also public and private offices, schools, universities, and in general, August 15th is a compulsory public holiday.

Bank Holiday August 15:

As per the RBI's holiday list, banks are closed across India due to Independence Day.

During holidays, financial transactions that require a visit to bank branches will not be possible since banks will be closed. However, online banking services like net banking, Google Pay, Paytm, and BharatPe will all be working as normal. Also, ATM services are fully operational on bank holidays.

August 15 Dry Day:

Majority of states will follow a dry day due to Independence Day. This means you cannot consume or buy alcohol at any restaurant, club or liquor shop.

Public Holiday August 15:

All states practice August 15 as a public holiday, meaning offices, schools, and universities will be closed as well.

School Holiday August 15:

Since Independence Day is a national holiday, all schools will be closed. However, the majority of schools carry a special ceremony in the early hours of August 15 to honour and celebrate the remarkable Independence Day, with marching, bands and speeches. So, students are likely to attend school for a few hours.

Airports, Trains, Transportation:

Airports are open and operational as usual. However, there could be a shortage of local train and bus services across India.

Independence Day 2025:

On August 15, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said, "Wishing everyone a very happy Independence Day. May this day inspire us to keep working even harder to realise the dreams of our freedom fighters and build a Viksit Bharat. Jai Hind!"

While President of India, Droupadi Murmu, said, "The fifteenth of August is a date etched in our collective memory. During the long years of colonial rule, generations of Indians dreamt of the day of independence. Men and women, old and young, from all parts of the country, yearned to throw away the yoke of foreign rule. Their struggle was marked by robust optimism, which has continued to propel our progress since Independence too. As we salute the tricolour tomorrow, we will also be paying homage to the memory of all freedom fighters whose sacrifices won India Independence on the 15th of August, 78 years ago."

As per PIB, the Nation will celebrate the 79th Independence Day on August 15, 2025, with the Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi leading the celebrations from the iconic Red Fort in Delhi. The Prime Minister will unfurl the National Flag and address the nation from the ramparts of the iconic monument. As the nation is making giant strides towards realising the Government's vision of Viksit Bharat by 2047, the theme of this year's celebrations is Naya Bharat. The celebrations will serve as a platform to commemorate the continuing rise of a prosperous, secure & bold Naya Bharat and provide renewed power to surge further ahead on the path to progress.
