Bank Holiday 2025: Why Banks Are Closed On August 8, 2025? Know About Tendong Lho Rum Faat

Bank employees are up for a long weekend, starting from August 8. However, bank holidays in India vary from state to state, depending upon national, public and state holidays. On August 8, banks will be closed in the regions of Sikkim due to celebration of Tendong Lho Rum Faat, an auspicious occasion fir the people of north-east India.

Bank Holiday August 8:

As per RBI's bank holiday list, banks will be closed in regions of Gangtok due to Tendong Lho Rum Faat.

During the bank holiday, financial transactions and services that take place in branches are closed. However, online banking services continue to operate as normal.

However, a bank holiday does not mean that the stock market, schools or public holiday will be on the same day. That being said, the stock market will be open on August 8. However, the Sikkim state has declared August 8th as a public holiday.

In the rest of the country, banks will operate as usual.

Tendong Lho Rum Faat Celebration:

As per the Utsav government website, Tendong Lho Rum Faat is considered to be one of the most ancient and significant festivals of Sikkim, celebrated by the Lepcha community. To honour 'Tendong Hill- the hill of the raised horn', for saving the Lepcha Tribe from a great disaster and to pay homage to their ancestors, the festival is celebrated with great fanfare across the state and particularly in its prime venue, Tendong Hill at Namchi.

Further, the website explained that Tendong Lho Rum Faat is a vivid mix of ceremonies and rituals and is celebrated for a span of three days in the 3rd month of the Tibetan Lunar calendar, which falls in the August timeframe according to the Gregorian calendar.A trek commencing from Ravangla / Damthang up to the Tendong Hill is the major highlight of this beautiful festival which draws trekkers and adventure enthusiasts from across the globe to experience this captivating trek which is embellished with glistening streams, rivulets and a dense forest replete with various species of birds.
