As per the RBI's holiday list, banks are closed in August in Manipur. Hence, banks like SBI, HDFC Bank, ICICI Bank, Axis Bank, IndusInd Bank, Kotak Bank, Canara Bank, Union Bank Of India, Punjab National Bank, and Bank of Baroda, among others, are closed on Thursday, especially in Imphal.
The reason is the celebration of Manipur's Patriots Day.
Manipur Patriots Day:
The state calls August 13th Patriots' Day to honor the Anglo-Manipur War, or Manipuri Rebellion, of 1891, which was a conflict between British colonial forces and the royal princes of the Manipur Kingdom.
The conflict began with a palace coup staged by the general (Senapati) of Manipur, ousting its reigning king, and installing a half-brother, the heir-apparent, in his place. The British government took objection to the action and attempted to arrest the general. The effort failed, with the Manipuri forces attacking the British residency and the resident and other British officials getting executed. The British launched a punitive expedition that lasted from 31 March to 27 April 1891. The general and other rebels were arrested and convicted. Manipur was converted into an Indian princely state subject to British Paramountcy, as per Wikipedia.
Hence, the state marks August 13 as Patriots' Day to honor their soldiers who died for the state during the war. Notably, Tikendrajit Singh's portrait is included in the National Portrait Gallery inside the House of the People in New Delhi.
Since it's a state-level holiday, schools and colleges will also be closed in Manipur.
A bank holiday in India is generally considered a public holiday when banks and other financial institutions remain closed. While not all public holidays are classified as bank holidays, as it varies with state and region.
