Bank Holidays 2025: Banks To Be Closed For 15 Days In August: Rakhi, Independence Day To Ganesh Chaturthi

Bank Holidays 2025: The month of August 2025 is packed with major festivals such as Raksha Bandhan, Independence Day, Janmashtami, and Tirubhav Tithi to Ganesh Chaturthi. Some of these festivals are holidays for banks, schools and the public at the state level. However, Independence Day celebration falls under the national holiday category. That being said, Indian scheduled commercial banks are in for a major holiday month.

In August, there are 15 bank holidays in total, including the second and fourth Saturdays, along with all Sundays. However, bank holidays vary from city to city.

Bank Holidays On August 8:

On Friday, August 8th, banks will be closed in the regions of Gantok due to the celebration of Tendong Lho Rum Faat, which is a major festival of Lepcha people in the northeast of the country.

Bank Holidays On August 9:

Banks will be closed in cities like Ahmedabad, Bhopal, Bhubaneswar, Dehradun, Jaipur, Kanpur, Lucknow, and Shimla due to the celebration of Raksha Bandhan and Jhulana Purnima. Also, August 9th is a second Saturday, which is a holiday for all banks in India.

Raksha Bandhan is a popular and traditionally Hindu annual rite or ceremony that is central to a festival of the same name celebrated in South Asia. It is also celebrated in other parts of the world that are significantly influenced by Hindu culture, as per Wikipedia.

Bank Holidays On August 13:

Banks will be closed in Imphal to honour Patriot's Day. As per the state government website, Patriots' Day is observed every year on 13th August in remembrance of those brave sons of Manipur who chose death over surrendering the sovereignty of their motherland to the British and laid down their lives gracefully.

Bank Holidays On August 15:

All banks in India will have a compulsory holiday due to the celebration of Independence Day on August 15. This is a national holiday.

Also, Parsi New Year falls on this day.

Bank Holidays On August 16:

Due to the celebration of Janmashtami or Krishna Jayanti, banks will be closed in cities like Ahmedabad, Aizawl, Bhopal, Chandigarh, Dehradun, Chennai, Gangtok, Hyderabad, Jaipur, Jammu, Kanpur, Lucknow, Patna, Raipur, Ranchi, Shillong, and Vijayawada on August 16.

Krishna Janmashtami, also known simply as Krishnashtami, Janmashtami, or Gokulashtami, is an annual Hindu festival that celebrates the birth of Krishna, the eighth avatar of Vishnu. In certain Hindu texts, such as the Gita Govinda, Krishna has been identified as the supreme God and the source of all avatars, as per Wikipedia.

Bank Holidays On August 19:

Banks will be closed in cities like Agartala due to the celebration of the Birthday of Maharaja Bir Bikram Kishore Manikya Bahadur.

Bank Holidays On August 25:

On this day, banks will be closed in cities like Guwahati due to the celebration of Tirubhav Tithi of Srimanta Sankardeva.

Bank Holidays On August 27 & August 28:

Banks will be closed in cities like Ahmedabad, Belapur, Bengaluru, Bhubaneswar, Chennai, Hyderabad, Mumbai, Nagpur, Panaji, and Vijayawada on August 27 and August 28 due to the onset of Ganesh Chaturthi, Samvatsari (Chaturthi Paksha), Varasiddhi Vinayaka Vrata, Ganesh Puja, and Vinayakar Chathurthi festivals.

Saturday Bank Holidays:

This month, there are five Saturdays. However, as per RBI's guidelines, banks will be closed on the second and fourth Saturdays, and operate on other Saturdays. Like that, banks will be operating on the fifth Saturday of August 2025.

The second and fourth Saturdays fall on August 8th and 23rd.

Hence, payment systems will not be operated on the second and fourth Saturdays but would operate for full day on working Saturdays. Payment systems typically includes Real Time Gross Settlement (RTGS), National Electronic Fund Transfer (NEFT), Cheque Clearing operated by various Bankers' Clearing Houses in the country including the grid based Cheque Truncation System (CTS) and ECS suite [Electronic Clearing Service (ECS), Regional Electronic Clearing Service (RECS) and National Electronic Clearing Service (NECS)].

Meanwhile, banks will be closed on all Sundays whose dates are --- August 3rd, 10th, 17th, 24th and 31st.
