Uttar Pradesh Old Age Pension Scheme: The Uttar Pradesh government has recently announced a major relief for senior citizens and pensioners. From now onwards, senior citizens in Uttar Pradesh are not required to apply for the state-run old age pension scheme separately. Eligible domiciles can get the benefit of senior citizen welfare scheme directly if their information is updated in their 'Family ID'.
The 12-digit identification card, 'Family ID', was launched to connect all the members of a family under a single ID system. Family ID, launched as the 'One Family, One Identity' system, will extend the purview of all the eligible schemes for old-age pensioners under the National Old Age Pension Scheme.

How Will Senior Citizens In UP get Pension Benefits?
All the senior citizens registered with a 'Family ID' number will automatically get registered for senior citizen welfare schemes like the 'Old Age Pension Scheme'. As per an HT report, the new system would now automatically identify eligible senior citizens. Once the identification is done, the government will automatically register the eligible pensioners for the scheme.
What is Family ID?
Family ID is a UP government initiative launched in July 2022 under the 'Ek Parivar, Ek Pahchan' system. The idea of the identification scheme is to create a collective database for storing the information of all the families in the state and ensure that they receive the all the state-run welfare schemes.
Other Decisions Approved By UP Cabinet
The state cabinet had also introduced significant reductions in stamp duty and registration fees for rent agreements lasting up to ten years. This initiative aims to promote legally binding contracts and reduce disputes from informal tenancy arrangements. The decision was made during a meeting led by Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath.
Currently, 67.50 lakh pensioners receive a monthly old-age pension of Rs 1000. An additional 8.25 lakh pensioners from the below poverty line (BPL) category are expected to join the scheme. This expansion will require an extra Rs 990 crore from the state government, which already allocates around Rs 8100 crore to this programme.
The reduction in stamp duty and registration fees is anticipated to encourage more formal rental agreements. By making these agreements legally enforceable, the government hopes to minimise conflicts between tenants and landlords that often arise from informal arrangements.
This move by the state cabinet reflects a commitment to improving living conditions for residents while ensuring that legal frameworks support harmonious landlord-tenant relationships. The changes are expected to benefit many individuals by providing clarity and reducing potential disputes.
