1. Software System Limitations
Many banking and financial software systems in India were not originally designed to handle international mobile numbers seamlessly. In some cases, there is no option to enter a country code while updating your number. The system automatically assumes you are entering an Indian number, making it impossible to register a foreign number without triggering an error.

2. No Provision for International Numbers
Several Indian banking systems are built to accept only a 10-digit Indian mobile number for verification purposes. Since foreign numbers do not fit this format, the system simply rejects them.

3. OTP Verification Challenges
In India, almost every banking or financial activity, from transactions to updating personal details, relies on OTP (One-Time Password) authentication. If your foreign SIM does not have international roaming enabled, the authentication SMS may fail. In many cases, foreign telecom providers also do not offer flexible short-term roaming activation.

By contrast, with an Indian SIM card, you can temporarily activate an international roaming pack whenever required and continue receiving or sending verification SMS messages without disruption.

4. UPI Linking Restrictions

UPI now supports mobile numbers from select foreign countries. However, if you live in a country that is not supported, you may not be able to link your foreign number to UPI services and use them smoothly while abroad.

How To Keep An Indian Mobile Number Active Abroad?

Because of these practical difficulties, many NRIs prefer to keep their Indian mobile number active even while living overseas.

The key is to ensure timely recharges. If you fail to recharge your Indian number for an extended period, telecom providers may deactivate and eventually reassign it. Once that happens, you may need to complete the entire re-KYC process across bank accounts, mutual funds, government portals, and other financial services.

One of the simplest ways to avoid this hassle is to recharge your Indian number with a 365-day validity plan. This small step can save considerable inconvenience and provide peace of mind, knowing that your banking and investment accounts remain connected to a functioning mobile number.

Another important consideration for NRIs is choosing a physical SIM card instead of an e-SIM. While e-SIMs are convenient, they can become problematic if you lose your phone or switch devices. In many cases, transferring or reactivating an e-SIM requires physical verification and may necessitate your presence in India. A physical SIM, on the other hand, is generally easier to manage and replace, making it a more practical option for NRIs living abroad.
