In line with RBI's guidelines, e-commerce giant Amazon has announced that it will stop accepting Rs 2,000 currency notes on orders selected for 'Cash On Delivery' with effect from September 19, 2023. RBI announced the withdrawal of India's highest denomination Rs 2,000 in May, however, the central bank has given till September 30th time for the return this banknote to banking system.
On Amazon FAQs, it is said, "We are currently accepting Rs. 2,000 currency notes. Starting September 19, 2023, we will not be accepting Rs. 2,000 currency notes for Cash on Delivery (COD) orders or Cashloads. This is by the directions issued by the Reserve Bank of India on May 19, 2023."

On queries related to the maximum value or limit up to which customers can use Rs 2000 notes, the Frequently Asked Questions stated that "You can pay the entire order value using Rs 2,000 currency notes. However, starting September 19, we will no longer accept payments through Rs 2,000 currency notes." However, there are Cash on Delivery (COD) limits added at the cart-level, to which, Amazon stated that check this on the product detail page before placing the order.
From September 19 onward, Amazon stated that they will not be accepting Rs 2,000 currency notes for cash loads or Cash on Delivery (COD) payments for orders Fulfilled by Amazon. However, if your product is delivered through a third-party courier partner, their own policies around the acceptance of Rs 2,000 currency notes will apply.
RBI decided to withdraw the ₹2000 denomination banknotes from circulation in pursuance of the "Clean Note Policy". Accordingly, RBI directed the members of the public to deposit ₹2000 banknotes into their bank accounts and/or exchange them into banknotes of other denominations at any bank branch. Deposit into bank accounts can be made in the usual manner, that is, without restrictions and subject to extant instructions and other applicable statutory provisions.
To ensure operational convenience and to avoid disruption of regular activities of bank branches, the exchange of ₹2000 banknotes into banknotes of other denominations can be made up to a limit of ₹20,000/- at a time at any bank starting from May 23, 2023.
To complete the exercise in a time-bound manner and to provide adequate time to the members of the public, RBI set September 30, 2023, as the last date for the return of Rs 2000 notes in the form of deposits or exchange to the system.
