What to buy On Dhaanteras

On what to buy, gold and silver top the list. The day is seen as being as auspicious as Akshaya Tritiya for buying gold and gold jewellery. Silver Coins are the most popular pick, and many are embossed with Goddess Lakshmi, or with Lakshmi and Ganesha. Silver has its own pull on Dhanteras. Silver coins, kalash, bowls, spoons, tumblers and silver Lakshmi-Ganesha idols see stronger demand than on Pushya Nakshatra day, when gold coins sell more.

Other traditional buys:

Those who do not want to spend on precious metals have traditional alternatives. Brass, copper and steel utensils and a new broom are all considered auspicious. A new brass or steel vessel for the kitchen is the classic choice, and many households also bring home a kalash or a Lakshmi-Ganesha idol. In recent years the tradition has widened to vehicles, electronics and even property documents. The one item to skip is iron. Iron and black goods are traditionally avoided, as iron is linked to Saturn and hardship.

Practical Gold & Silver buying tips

A few practical points matter more than the muhurat itself. Buy only BIS-hallmarked gold and check the HUID on jewellery. Compare making charges and the day's rate across jewellers, since festive offers vary widely, and keep the GST bill and purity certificate. Buyers who cannot reach a shop within the muhurat can book online and collect later, which many jewellers allow.
