Digi Yatra To Transform International Travel With E-passports, Hotel Check-ins & More; Details Here

Digi Yatra is set to take flight into international territories, promising a seamless journey for travellers worldwide before the end of 2025. The makeover of the digital travel platform encompasses integrating e-passports, hotel check-ins, and access to public places.

The Digi Yatra Foundation (DYF), spearheading this initiative, aims to streamline international travel by creating e-passport verifiable credentials. These credentials will be integrated into the Digi Yatra app, facilitating automated border control practices for departure and arrival immigration processes. In a recent interview with The Financial Express Suresh Khadakbhavi, CEO of DYF, emphasized on the time-saving benefits, with automated immigration clearances potentially saving travelers over an hour's wait time.

The integration of chip-enabled e-passports into the Digi Yatra app marks an important step towards global interoperability, aligning with initiatives like IATA One-ID to streamline passenger journeys worldwide. Countries like Finland, Croatia, the Netherlands, and Canada are experimenting with digital travel, making Digi Yatra a go-to place in digital transformation within the travel sector.

The recent upgrade of the biometric boarding system at Indian airports lays the groundwork for Digi Yatra's expansion to more airports and its international venture. Speculations surrounding the upgrade were dispelled by DYF, clarifying that it was a preparatory measure for upcoming expansions and enhancements, including hotel check-ins and public place access.

Furthermore, Digi Yatra's vision extends beyond facilitating travel; it aims to position India as a global transit hub. By prioritizing efficiency and convenience for travellers, Digi Yatra seeks to enhance India's connectivity and shopping experiences, ultimately bolstering its status as a global hub.

"The decentralized mobile-based ID storage platform ensures secure storage of travellers' IDs and documents," Khadakbhavi explained, highlighting the safety and privacy enhancements during hotel check-ins and other interactions.

Looking ahead, DYF envisions incorporating fully homomorphic encryption technology, further enhancing data security and privacy. Addressing concerns about data security, DYF emphasizes that Digi Yatra adopts stringent measures, including purging data after 24 hours and giving passengers full control over their information.

"While manual processes will remain available, Digi Yatra anticipates widespread adoption of facial recognition technology-based travel, driven by its safety features and streamlined experiences," Khadakbhavi concluded.

Digi Yatra's expansion into international travel transcends into a new era of seamless and secure journeys for travellers worldwide. By leveraging technology and prioritizing passenger convenience, Digi Yatra might set new standards for efficiency and safety in global travel.
