EPS Pension Calculation: How a Rs. 32,000 Salary Could Affect Pension, 65% Hike Explained
Employees who are covered under the Employees' Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO) may benefit from changes to the wage ceiling used for provident fund and pension contributions.
With the ceiling officially rising from Rs. 15,000 to Rs. 25,000 per month effective September 17, 2026, millions of workers have questions about how this shift affects their take-home pay, retirement corpus, and monthly pensions.

However, a higher wage ceiling does not automatically mean that every employee will receive a pension increase of more than 65%. The actual benefit depends on the applicable rules, the employee's pensionable salary, and their eligible years of service.
How is the EPFO pension calculated?
The monthly pension under the Employees' Pension Scheme (EPS) is generally calculated using the following formula:
Monthly pension = (Pensionable salary × Pensionable service) ÷ 70
Pensionable salary is generally based on the average salary over the last 60 months of pensionable service, subject to the applicable ceiling and rules. Pensionable service refers to the period for which an employee has contributed to the pension scheme.
How much pension could an employee receive after 20 years?
Consider an employee earning Rs. 32,000 per month who has completed 20 years of service.
The original report calculates the pension using 22 years of service, including an additional two years as a service bonus. Using that assumption, the calculation would be:
(Rs. 32,000 × 22) ÷ 70 = approximately Rs. 10,057 per month.
How much does the employer contribute to PF?
Under the usual EPF contribution structure, an employee contributes 12% of their basic wages and applicable dearness allowance, while the employer also contributes 12%, subject to the relevant rules.
Of the employer's contribution, 8.33% is generally allocated to the EPS pension fund, subject to the applicable wage ceiling. The remaining 3.67% goes towards the EPF account under the standard contribution arrangement.
