Gas Cylinder New Rules: Remove Indane, HP, Bharat Gas in 30 Days After PNG Connection, No LPG Refill Too!

The oil ministry has revised the rules of dual gas connections for Indian households, which will offer big relief to PNG-LPG customers. In the latest rules, the government gives customers a 30-day time frame to terminate their LPG connections after obtaining a PNG connection. But, worry not, the government also announced a provision allowing these customers to avail themselves of a voucher for future restoration of LPG connection if they move to non-PNG areas.

Gas Cylinder New Rules For PNG Connection:

On May 25, 2026, the government notified the Liquefied Petroleum Gas (Regulation of Supply and Distribution) Amendment Order, 2026. The amendment aims to provide additional relaxation and convenience to domestic LPG consumers who subsequently obtain piped natural gas (PNG) connections.

Under the new rules, those who have PNG connections:

- Are required to apply for termination of their LPG connection within 30 (thirty) days of obtaining PNG connection/

- But these customers can obtain a transfer voucher for future restoration of LPG connection in a non-PNG area.

Oil Ministry said, "This amendment provides significant relief and flexibility to consumers who may subsequently shift to areas where PNG infrastructure may not be feasible."

"The provision is particularly beneficial for transferable employees, migrant households, tenants, students, and/or families shifting to non-PNG areas," it added.

Hence, if you obtain a PNG connection, you cannot apply for LPG refill but will have to terminate your Indane Gas, Bharat Gas or HP Gas connection within 30 days.

LPG-PNG Connections:

The government has revised rules for customers with both LPG and PNG connections since the US-Israel-Iran war escalated in late February 2026. The shutdown of the Strait of Hormuz has pushed a severe energy crisis globally and led to a deep shortage of petroleum products. The government has prioritized LPG allocation to Indian households but has also pushed for PNG expansion as an alternative cooking gas.

The government's March 24th order, Natural Gas and Petroleum Products Distribution (Through Laying, Building, Operation, and Expansion of Pipelines and Other Facilities) Order, 2026 under the Essential Commodities Act, 1955, provides a streamlined and time-bound framework for laying and expanding pipelines across the country, addressing delays in approvals and access to land, and enabling faster development of natural gas infrastructure, including in residential areas.

It is expected to accelerate PNG network growth, enhance last-mile connectivity, and support the transition to cleaner fuels, thereby strengthening energy security and advancing India's gas-based economy.

In March, the government directed customers to switch from LPG connection to piped natural gas within span of 3 months. The rule is meant for LPG customers who are residing in PNG-infrastructure areas.

Apart from this, the government has barred customers with PNG connections to apply for new LPG connections and asked them to surrender their Indane, BharatGas and HP gas connections to enable maximum supply of LPG allocation to those areas where PNG infrastructure is not available.

The new rule offers relief as these customers can apply for a voucher to restore their LPG connections when they move to non-PNG localities.

Additionally, oil marketing companies have been promoting and expediting the process of LPG surrender and process of switching to PNG.

Data from Oil Ministry on Monday showed that since March 2026, about 7.99 Lakh PNG connections have been gasified and infrastructure has been created for additional 2.87 Lakh connections, taking the total to 10.86 lakh connections. Further, about 8.27 Lakh customers have been registered for new connections.

Meanwhile, more than 59,800 PNG consumers have surrendered their LPG connections via MYPNGD.in website as of May 24, 2026.

Additionally, the city-gas distribution companies are carrying PNG Drive 2.0 scheme for PNG connection. This scheme was started from January 1, 2026, and is expected to end on June 30, 2026.
