The Great Indian Festival 2024 hosted by Amazon India set new records with 140 crore customer visits. The event highlighted significant sales growth among sellers from tier-2 cities, showcasing the expanding market and the impact of online shopping across India.
The Great Indian Festival (GIF) hosted by Amazon India in 2024 has achieved unparalleled success, setting new records in its history. Spanning a month from 27 September to early November, the event attracted a staggering 140 crore customer visits. The surge in activity was particularly noticeable from non-metro cities, contributing to more than 85% of the total traffic. This year's festival not only saw an increase in customer visits but also marked a significant boost in sales for sellers, especially those from tier-2 cities and beyond.

Significant to this year's success was the participation of Amazon Prime members, with nearly 70% of them shopping during the festival hailing from tier-2 and smaller cities. Amazon reported an unprecedented number of Prime sign-ups in the first two days alone, offering expedited delivery on over 3 crore items to its members. This surge in Prime memberships underscores the event's wide-reaching appeal and Amazon's growing footprint across India's vast and varied landscape.
Sellers from non-metro cities notably exceeded sales expectations, with over 70% surpassing the INR 1 crore sales mark, a considerable increase compared to the previous year. This year's festival was particularly beneficial for small businesses, artisans, and women entrepreneurs, who sold over 1,000 units every minute. Approximately 42,000 sellers experienced their highest-ever single-day sales, with a majority being from smaller towns, highlighting the festival's role in democratizing online sales and providing a platform for diverse sellers across the country.
Financial flexibility was a key feature of this year’s festival, thanks to Amazon Pay. There was a 50% increase in transactions using ICICI Bank credit cards and a 20% rise in UPI transactions. The use of EMI options, particularly for electronics purchases, was a highlight, with most EMIs being offered at no extra cost. This ease of payment contributed significantly to a 20% increase in flight bookings and a 60% surge in hotel reservations, indicating a broader impact on the travel sector.
The demand for tech and home improvement products saw a notable rise. Large-screen TVs, 5G smartphones, and audio products were in high demand, with Amazon’s own devices like the Fire TV Stick and Redmi Smart Fire TV among the top sellers. The sales of non-gaming and gaming laptops, especially those powered by Intel, grew by 30% year-over-year. Additionally, home improvement items and festive decorations such as string lights and garlands witnessed increased sales, reflecting the festive spirit of the event.
The significant contribution of customers from non-metro cities was evident, accounting for over half of all TV and large appliance sales. Amazon Bazaar, catering to essential daily needs, saw its user base quadruple, primarily driven by shoppers from tier-2 cities and beyond. This shift indicates a growing market and acceptance of online shopping across different regions of India.
Amazon Business also saw remarkable growth, with a 50% increase in first-time business buyers. Many opted for Prime membership to enjoy benefits like early access and faster delivery. The demand for bulk discounts rose as businesses ordered larger quantities, benefiting from a range of tailored discounts. This trend highlights the expanding role of GIF not just as a retail event but as a significant business-to-business marketplace.
In wrapping up, the Great Indian Festival of 2024 has not only set new benchmarks for Amazon India but has also played a pivotal role in boosting the online marketplace across the country. By attracting a record number of visitors, especially from non-metro cities, and achieving unprecedented sales figures, the event has underscored the growing reach and influence of online shopping in India.
