IMD Warns of Heavy Rain in Karnataka Today; Thunderstorms, Strong Winds Likely Across Several Districts

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a weather warning for several parts of Karnataka, forecasting light to moderate rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms, lightning, squally weather, and strong surface winds at isolated places on Sunday, August 9.

The alert covers Coastal Karnataka, North Interior Karnataka, and South Interior Karnataka.

According to the IMD's latest seven-day weather outlook, the Coastal Karnataka weather is likely to experience heavy rainfall along with thunderstorms, lightning, squally weather, and strong surface winds at isolated places.

Meanwhile, North Interior Karnataka and South Interior Karnataka are expected to see thunderstorms with lightning and gusty winds, although no heavy rain warning has been issued for these regions.

The weather department's forecast shows that major warnings have been issued from August 10 to August 15 across all three meteorological subdivisions of Karnataka.

While scattered rainfall may be seen in some areas, widespread severe weather is not expected during this period.

Rainfall in Karnataka Over The Last 24 Hours

Meanwhile, several districts across Karnataka recorded heavy to very heavy rainfall during the past 24 hours.

The highest rainfall of 139.5 mm was recorded at Balanja in Belthangady, Dakshina Kannada district. Mala in Karkala, Udupi district, recorded 115.5 mm, followed by Agumbe in Shivamogga district with 115 mm of rainfall.

Other places that saw intense rainfall include Hanagal Tillavalli (Haveri) with 103.5 mm, Kudururu in Sagara (Shivamogga) with 99.5 mm, Agumbe in Thirthahalli (Shivamogga) with 95 mm, Kokkada in Belthangady (Dakshina Kannada) with 95 mm, Begar in Sringeri (Chikkamagaluru) with 90 mm, Shirady in Puttur (Dakshina Kannada) with 84.5 mm, and Shankarshanbhog in Sagara (Shivamogga) with 83 mm.

Other Districts That Received Major Rainfall

Moderate to heavy rainfall was also recorded in Kodagu, Chikkamagaluru, Udupi, Shivamogga, and Kolar districts. Stations including Madikeri, Hosanagara, Sringeri, Kalasa, Brahmavara, Hebri, Koppa, Moodabidri (Bajegoli), Shivapura, and several other locations received rainfall ranging between 50 mm and 77 mm.
