Indane, BharatGas, HP Gas LPG To Be Suspended In 20 Days? Beware Of Fake PNG Messages; Major LPG-PNG Rules
The city-gas distributing companies (CGD) have been expanding piped natural gas (PNG) connections at full swing. However, with major focus shifted towards PNG as an alternative to LPG cylinders amidst energy crisis stemming from West Asia war, there is also an increase in black marketing, hoarding and scams. Among the latest to cautious customers of both LPG and PNG is Mahanagar Gas Ltd. MGL has warned customers about fake messages that claim your PNG connections are discontinued.
Fake PNG Disconnection Messages:

Through its X handle, MGL advised customers to beware of fake PNG disconnection calls and threats.
"Please note that MGL does not issue disconnection threats via SMS/WhatsApp, request the download of third-party APKs, or ask customers to call unverified numbers for billing updates," it said.
According to MGL, many scammers are sending messages that ask them to call a specific number or else their PNG connection will be disconnected because the previous month's meter reading was not updated.
MGL warned and said to avoid communication with such scam messages and letters.

Since the US-Israel-Iran war, the Indian government has promoted switching to PNG to reduce dependency on LPG cylinders, which is the cooking gas used by 80% of Indian households. The Middle East war led to a global energy crisis and there is no signs of resolution between US-Israel-Iran as of now; hence, the global oil and gas supply continues to be impacted.
Amidst this, the government issued several rules to reduce the burden on LPG supply and promote PNG.
LPG-PNG Connection New Rules:
Among many rules is that the government has banned PNG customers from applying for new LPG connections or booking LPG refills.
2. In the latest rule, the government has asked customers to terminate their LPG connections within 30 days after obtaining PNG connections.
3. PNG customers who terminate their LPG connections after getting PNG have the option to avail a transfer voucher, which can be used to get LPG connections back when they move to a non-PNG area.
4. The government has revised their lock-in period for refilling LPG cylinders to 25 days for customers in urban areas and to 45 days for customers in rural areas. Earlier, the gap to buy an LPG refill was just 21 days.
5. The new rule is that every household will have only one gas connection. Hence, the oil and gas companies are identifying customers with dual connections and sending messages to surrender their LPG. This rule is called 'No Dual Connection' or 'One Household, One Gas Connection,' meaning you can have only one connection and PNG is the first preferred option now. So if you have both LPG and PNG, you will have to give up LPG connections.
National Centralized Portal For PNG:
Sources told The Indian Express that the government is actively considering a proposal to launch a national centralized portal for consumers to apply for PNG connections. However, there is no clear timeline.
As per the report, this also includes implementing gas grid maps online to ostensibly facilitate customer requests and their ability to locate a pipeline near their premises. But there are potential security risks around placing natural gas pipeline layouts and maps in the public domain.
Last week, Gail India tweeted, saying, "In just five months, PNG has reached 11 lakh new households across India, delivering the convenience of uninterrupted supply, enhanced safety, and cleaner energy. A growing movement towards smarter living is underway."
Indane Gas, Bharat Gas, HP Gas Connections To Be Removed By June 30?
The government's March 24th order, Natural Gas and Petroleum Products Distribution (Through Laying, Building, Operation, and Expansion of Pipelines and Other Facilities) Order, 2026 under the Essential Commodities Act, 1955, provides a streamlined and time-bound framework for laying and expanding pipelines across the country, addressing delays in approvals and access to land, and enabling faster development of natural gas infrastructure, including in residential areas.
In March 2026, the government gave an ultimatum of three months to switch to PNG if you already have the facilities. Additionally, the government asked PNG customers to surrender their LPGs and to not apply for a new LPG connection or refill.
The new rule has asked households with PNG infrastructure to switch their cooking gas to PNG within 90 days since the date of the notice, which was on March 24, 2026. Any non-compliance could lead to suspension of LPG supply.
Going by the notice date of March 24, 2026, the 90-day deadline ends on June 24, 2026. However, the government has not confirmed or given any deadline date as of now. This also increases the probability of extension in the switch to PNG facility.
The latest update of Oil Ministry revealed that since March 2026, about 9.16 Lakh PNG connections have been gasified and infrastructure has been created for additional 3.05 Lakh connections, taking the total to 12.21 lakh connections. Further, about 9.24 Lakh customers have been registered for new connections. Till June 7, 2026, around 82,000 PNG consumers have surrendered their LPG connections via MYPNGD.in website.
