A life insurance policy is an important document and would be necessary at the time of redemption. However, it is highly possible that you could have lost your life insurance policy or misplaced it. Therefore, it becomes imperative that you apply for a new one. Here is a procedure to apply for a new life insurance policy certificate.
All the terms and conditions of the previous policy will stand.
Make an application
You will need to make an application to the life insurance company, where you will clearly mention all of your policy details, including name, name of nominee, address, date of birth etc.
Also, you may have to pay a fee for issuance of a duplicate copy. You need to check the charges, though it is not very much.
Place an advertisement in the newspaper
You may have to place an advertisement in a newspaper. This really depends on the insurance company and you will have to check for other guidelines. After publishing the advertisement, the insurance company is likely to wait for a month at the very least. If there are no concerns raised by anybody after the advertisement, the insurance company would ask you for an indemnity bond.
This is normally done on a non-judicial stamp paper of appropriate value for duplicate policy. All the important details like name of the policyholder and policy number needs to be mentioned on the indemnity bond. There is likely to be a requirement of witnesses as well to sign on he bond.
Once the insurance company has satisfied itself that the documents and requirement are in order, it will proceed to issue a new life insurance policy. The word duplicate would be mentioned on the insurance policy. The other terms and conditions of the policy would remain unchanged.
To get a duplicate insurance policy is not really hassle free. Therefore, it is best if you keep your documents in order instead of running around at a later stage.
