What is a dividend?

Dividend is a part of company's earnings/profit distributed to shareholders / investors, determined, approved and declared by the board of directors. It is usually paid regularly in form of cash or additional stock. Dividends are distributed quarterly mostly after the results are declared. It is a form of earning a return for an investor by investing in a company stock.

It is shared as a fraction of per share in percentage of per share price, and is called dividend yield. Investors receive this dividend yield only if they are owing a stock before a date called as ex-dividend date.

Taxation on dividends

In India any form of income earned is taxable, so is dividend income as well. Initially, income earned from dividends was not taxable in the hands of investors, but now its taxable.
If you are an investor investing in shares through a broker, your dividends will be added to your income. It be treated as your 'income from other sources'. This income will be taxed as per your income tax slab. However, you can still claim deductions for your interest expenditure not exceeding 20 percent of your dividend amount. The normal rate of TDS is 10% on dividend income paid in excess of Rs 5,000 from a company.
