Taxation on dividends
Please note that dividends are taxed in India. So, if you are in the 30% tax bracket, your liability of dividends could be at those same levels. Apart from this, there is a tds of 10% that is applicable in case the dividends are over Rs 5000. For example, if you invested in company A, and receive dividends of Rs 8000, there is likely to be a tds, unless you submit form 15g or form 15h as the case maybe. Also, traders in the market would have to show the dividends as business income, while other investors can show it as income from other sources. Whatever the source once thing is clear that dividends are taxable.
Should you invest in high paying dividend stocks?
As mentioned earlier, if it is a one-off dividend than you might want to stay away and look at stocks that are consistent with their dividends. One classic example is the stock of Cola India, where the dividends have been very consistent over the years. So, look before you leap.
