Things to note about bonus, dividend and stock splits
The shares of the companies that go ex-dividend, ex-bonus and ex-stock splits tend to correct the next day. However, the proportion of correction may not be the same. So, if a stock is trading at Rs 500 and the stock is available with bonus and it goes ex bonus the next day, the stock would correct to around Rs 250, though not precisely the same. This tends to happen with stock splits and companies that have declared big dividends as well. Sometimes, the dividends can also be one-off in the sense that it could be from the profits based on the sale of an asset.
Taxation on dividends
It's important to remember that dividends in the hands of investors are taxed and hence companies that pay a very high one off dividend would not be great to buy, if you are in the highest tax bracket and are having a short term capital gains possibility. The tax rates are high and not very lucrative for those in the highest tax bracket. There is also a tax deducted at source that is applicable if the dividend income goes above Rs 5000.
