As the Income Tax Return (ITR) filing season for Financial Year (FY) 2024-25 (Assessment Year 2025-26) approaches, it's crucial for taxpayers to be aware of the key deadlines to ensure compliance and avoid penalties. Based on the responses taken from an interview with Shefali Mundra:- Tax expert at Clear Tax, here are the ITR filing deadlines in 2025 that a taxpayer shouldn't miss.

1.What are the key ITR filing deadlines for different taxpayer categories (individuals, businesses, freelancers) in 2025?
| Taxpayer Category | Filing Deadline |
|---|---|
| Individuals, HUFs, AOPs, BOIs (Non-Audit Cases) | July 31, 2025 |
| Businesses/Professionals Requiring Audit | October 31, 2025 |
| Companies (Domestic) | October 31, 2025 |
| Taxpayers with Transfer Pricing Reports | November 30, 2025 |
| Belated/Revised Returns | December 31, 2025 |
2. What happens if someone misses the ITR filing deadline? Are there penalties or late fees?
Failing to file your ITR by the stipulated deadline can lead to several repercussions
Late Filing Fee: Under Section 234F of the Income Tax Act, a penalty is levied for late filing. Rs 1,000 if your total income does not exceed Rs 5 lakh and Rs 5,000 if your total income exceeds Rs 5 lakh.
Interest on Tax Due: An interest of 1% per month or part thereof is charged on the unpaid tax amount under Section 234A.
Loss of Certain Benefits: Late filing may result in the loss of the ability to carry forward certain losses to future years.
3. Are there any changes in the ITR filing deadlines compared to the previous financial year?
For FY 2024-25, the Income Tax Department has maintained the same filing deadlines as the previous year. However, taxpayers should be aware of the introduction of new ITR forms and changes in reporting requirements, which may affect the filing process.
4. By when should salaried individuals ideally file their returns to avoid last-minute rush?
Salaried individuals are advised to file their ITRs well before the July 31, 2025 deadline to avoid last-minute rush and potential technical glitches. Ideally, filing should be done soon after receiving Form 16 from the employer, which is typically issued by mid-June.
5. What is the deadline for filing revised or belated returns for FY 2024-25?
If you miss the initial filing deadline, you can still file a belated or revised return by December 31, 2025. However, it's important to note that belated returns may attract penalties and interest, and certain benefits like loss carry-forward may not be available.
6. Are there different deadlines for taxpayers who require an audit versus those who don't?
Yes, taxpayers whose accounts require auditing have different deadlines:
- Businesses/Professionals Requiring Audit: October 31, 2025.
- Taxpayers with Transfer Pricing Reports: November 30, 2025.
These extended deadlines accommodate the additional time needed for auditing processes.
