The Indian stock market has been experiencing a downturn for the last five months, causing concern among investors and traders. The outlook remains uncertain due to the lack of domestic catalysts and supportive events. Key factors influencing the market include Donald Trump's trade policies, corporate earnings, and foreign investor sentiment. Mid and small-cap stocks have suffered significantly, dropping by 28-29%, while the Sensex and Nifty have decreased by about 15-16% from their peak levels.
In February, the Indian equity market recorded its fifth consecutive monthly decline, marking the second-largest drop since March 2020. Despite this, there have been positive signs in March, with three out of five trading days showing recovery, particularly in mid and small-cap sectors. However, challenges such as slowing earnings growth, foreign investor withdrawals, and global uncertainties continue to loom. Foreign Institutional Investors (FIIs) have pulled out $13.8 billion by February 2025, reducing India's global market cap share to 3.6%, the lowest in 16 months.
Motilal Oswal Financial Services (MOFSL) has published a report titled "Bulls & Bears (March 2025): India Valuations Handbook," highlighting top investment opportunities. The report recommends investing in large-cap stocks with strong fundamentals and stable earnings. Suggested picks include RIL, Bharti Airtel, ICICI Bank, SBI, HUL, L&T, Sun Pharma, Maruti Suzuki, M&M, Titan, and LTIMindtree.
MOFSL anticipates that ICICI Bank and SBI will benefit from strong loan growth and improved asset quality. Bharti Airtel is expected to see gains from increased ARPU driven by 5G adoption. L&T is likely to gain from infrastructure development support, while Sun Pharma is considered a solid choice due to growth in specialty drugs.
In the mid and small-cap segments, MOFSL identifies Indian Hotels, Dixon Technologies, JSW Energy, BSE, Godrej Properties, Coforge, JSW Infra, Page Industries, Metro Brands, and Angel One as promising investments. Indian Hotels is expected to benefit from a rebound in tourism. Dixon Technologies stands to gain from electronics growth spurred by the PLI scheme. Coforge is poised to benefit from AI transformation initiatives.
The brokerage firm advises investors to focus on quality large-cap stocks in a risk-averse environment while also considering select growth-oriented mid-caps.
