IRCTC Warns Through Google Ads: Here's How You Can Protect Yourself From Fake IRCTC Refund Scam!

In a world where digital transactions have become the norm, staying vigilant against online scams is crucial. The Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC) has recently issued a warning to its users, urging them not to fall prey to fraudulent Google ads claiming to assist with ticket refunds. These ads are part of a broader scheme where scammers commit online financial fraud under the guise of IRCTC services.

"IRCTC never asks for personal banking info or to install remote control apps. Beware of frauds via Google ads claiming IRCTC refunds!" This message was shared by the CyberDost handle, an initiative by the Telecom department's cybersecurity awareness team maintained by the Ministry of Home Affairs, on X (formerly known as Twitter).

The IRCTC has made it clear that neither it nor its employees will ever call users regarding refund issues or request personal banking details such as Debit Card/Credit Card numbers, OTPs, ATM PINs, CVV numbers, PAN numbers, or dates of birth. They also emphasize that users will never be asked to install remote control applications like Anydesk or Teamviewer on their mobile devices, laptops, or desktops.

Scammers are increasingly using Google ads to trap unsuspecting users. These ads often claim to help with IRCTC ticket refunds but are designed to steal personal and financial information. The IRCTC has advised users to be cautious and to report any cybercrime complaints to the official cybercrime portal at cybercrime.gov.in. In case of financial fraud, users can also dial the helpline number 1930 for assistance.

In addition to the fraudulent Google ads, IRCTC has also alerted Android smartphone users about a malicious campaign involving a fake IRCTC app. Scammers send phishing links urging users to download a counterfeit 'IRCTC Rail Connect mobile app. This fake app is designed to deceive users and commit fraudulent activities.

In a mail to its customers and a post on X, IRCTC informed users about this dangerous campaign. The warning read: "Dear Customer, It has been reported that a malicious and fake mobile app campaign is in circulation where some fraudsters are sending phishing links at a mass level and insisting users to download fake 'IRCTC Rail Connect' mobile app to trick common citizens into fraudulent activities."

To safeguard against these fraudulent schemes, IRCTC advises users to download the official IRCTC app only from trusted sources such as the Google Play Store and Apple App Store. Users should avoid clicking on suspicious links or responding to messages that prompt them to download apps through the provided links.

Here are some additional tips to protect yourself from such scams:

Verify Authenticity: Always verify the authenticity of any communication claiming to be from IRCTC. Official communications will come from recognized channels.
Avoid Sharing Personal Information: Never share personal banking information or install remote control apps as instructed by unsolicited calls or messages.
Report Suspicious Activity: If you encounter suspicious activity or believe you have been targeted by a scam, report it immediately to the appropriate authorities through cybercrime.gov.in or by calling 1930.
Educate Yourself and Others: Stay informed about the latest scams and share this information with friends and family to help protect them from falling victim to these schemes.

The rise of digital transactions has brought convenience but also increased the risk of online fraud. IRCTC's approach in warning users about these scams is a crucial step in combating cybercrime. By staying vigilant and following the guidelines provided by IRCTC, users can protect themselves from falling prey to these fraudulent activities.
