Amid the coronavirus pandemic, providing ease to tax assesses the department of Income tax has extended the due date to file income return for the financial year 2019-20 (Assessment year 2020-21) to December 31, 2020. And now as the due date to file ITR is very close, the department of income tax on December 28, 2020 in its tweet via its official twitter handle said "More than 4.23 crore Income Tax Returns for AY 2020-21 have already been filed till 27th of December, 2020. Have you filed yours? If not filed as yet, don't wait. File your #ITR for AY 2020-21 TODAY!".

Here are the important dates for ready reference of taxpayers for ITR filing:

December 31, 2020- This is due date for submitting various audit reports under the Income Tax Act that includes the tax audit report as well as report concerning international or specified domestic transactions. Also, ITRs of those taxpayers whose accounts are not to be audited are to be furnished by this date. Previously, this due date was extended to November 30 and in a usual case it is generally July 31.

January 31, 2021: It is the due date for submitting ITRs by those taxpayers whose accounts are to be audited.

January 31, 2021: Also January 31st is the due date for small taxpayers, or income tax assessees with tax liability up to Rs 1 lakh.

The tax department on Monday said more than 4.23 crore taxpayers have filed their Income Tax Returns for Assessment Year 2020-21 (fiscal year 2019-20) till December 27.
