ITR Filing 2025: Key Documents Required To File Income Tax Return

The season of Income Tax Return (ITR) Filing 2025 has begun, and the Income Tax Department (IT Department) has released all seven ITR forms for the financial year 2025-26. While the IT department regularly keeps updating income tax payers about their ITR filing returns, many people must be unsure about the number of documents required for filing ITR.

Income Tax Return (ITR) filing is the process for individuals to disclose their income, taxes paid to the government, other investments, and financial details to the Income Tax Department of India.

ITR

Filing an income tax return is very important, whether individuals are salaried, freelancers, or small business owners. But missing on necessary ITR filing documents may lead to ITR filing rejections and unwanted delays. Here are the important documents required for ITR filing in 2025.

Form 16 (Part A & B)

Form 16 (including Part A and Part B) is a certificate issued by employers for the tax deducted at source (TDS) on salary payments. This ITR form is issued by the employer, and the deduction allowed under the Income Tax Act Form 16 is a vital document for salaried individuals. It also simplifies the process of filing ITR.

Salary Slips

Taxpayers must also attach their salary slips to their file, which will enable the Income Tax department to cross-check the Form 16 along with pre-filed data on the e-filing portal of the Income Tax website.

Form 26 AS

Form 26 AS is a consolidated annual information statement for a particular financial year (FY). It includes all the TDS, tax collected at source (TCS). It also provides details of any amount deducted as TDS or TCS from various sources of income.

Investment Proofs

Taxpayers are required to prove their investment by submitting their certificates related to capital gains tax and interest certificates. Those who have taken a loan must take their home loan interest rate certificate.

Individuals with profit or loss in interest rate income can get P&L statement from their broker. They should also get details of their capital assets and other details.

Aadhaar-linked PAN

Individuals must also ensure that their Aadhaar is linked with PAN card. Individuals are required to fill their Aadhaar and PAN details. Additionally, they have to also fill their bank details.

ITR Filing Date Extended

The Income Tax Department on Tuesday extended its due date to file income tax return for the financial year 2024-25. Earlier, the ITR filing deadline was Juky 31, which has now been extended to September 15, 2025.

The ITR Filing deadline has been extended after there was a delay in releasing of the notification for income tax return forms. Apart from this, the IT department is yet to issue the utilities to file the income tax return.

"Kind Attention Taxpayers! CBDT has decided to extend the due date of filing of ITRs, which are due for filing by 31st July 2025, to 15th September 2025. This extension will provide more time due to significant revisions in ITR forms, system development needs, and TDS credit reflections. This ensures a smoother and more accurate filing experience for everyone. Formal notification will follow," read post by IT Department on Tuesday.
