Amidst keeping the policy repo rate unchanged at 5.5%, the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) issued a new warning to the account holders of Jan Dhan accounts. RBI governor Sanjay Malhotra said a large number of Jan Dhan accounts have fallen due to re-KYC. Hence, the central bank has guided to organise camps for re-KYC till September 30, 2025.
Launched in 2014, Jan Dhan Account is focused on offering banking services across the country, especially to the unsecured, unserved and unbanked households. The PMJDY account provides a periodic overdraft facility, insurance covers and RuPay cards access. Anyone can open a PMJDY account with zero balance. 
RBI Warning On Jan Dhan Account:
In his statement on August 6, 2025, the RBI governor said, "As Jan-dhan Scheme completes 10 years, a large number of accounts have fallen due for re-KYC."
He added that the banks are organising camps at the Panchayat level from 1st July to 30th September, in an endeavour to provide services at customer doorsteps.
"Apart from opening new bank accounts and re-KYC, the camps will focus on micro insurance and pension schemes for financial inclusion and customer grievance redress," said Malhotra.
RBI's statement comes a day after Prime Minister Narendra Modi shared an article on how Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana has transformed access to financial services for the poorest.
"Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana has transformed access to financial services for the poorest. It has bridged the gap between banks and the unbanked, promoting dignity, self-reliance and economic inclusion," said PM Modi on August 5, 2025.
What is Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana account?
PMJDY was launched with a National Mission on Financial Inclusion which has an integrated approach to bring about comprehensive financial inclusion and provide banking services to all households in the country.
The scheme ensures access to a range of financial services like availability of basic savings bank account, access to need based credit, remittances facility, insurance and pension, as per government website.
Jan Dhan Yojana Account Benefits:
Over the time, the government has upgraded the benefits under PM Jan Dhan Yojana account.
The latest special benefits under PMJDY are:
- PMJDY offers one basic bank account for every unbanked adult.
- For this account, there is no need to maintain a balance, and also there are no charges levied on them.
- The account also offers free of cost RuPay Debit card with in-built accident insurance cover of Rs. 2 lakh.
- Also, the accountholders under PMJDY are eligible for an overdraft of Rs 10,000 to cover exigencies.
- Furthermore, the account is eligible for Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT) under Pradhan Mantri Jeevan Jyoti Bima Yojana (PMJJBY), Pradhan Mantri Suraksha Bima Yojana (PMSBY), Atal Pension Yojana (APY), Micro Units Development & Refinance Agency Bank (MUDRA) scheme.
Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana Account Documents Requirement:
- If Aadhaar Card/Aadhaar Number is available then no other documents is required. If address has changed, then a self certification of current address is sufficient.
- If Aadhaar Card is not available, then any one of the following Officially Valid Documents (OVD) is required: Voter ID Card, Driving License, PAN Card, Passport & NREGA Card. If these documents also contain your address, it can serve both as "Proof of Identity and Address".
- If a person does not have any of the "officially valid documents" mentioned above, but it is categorized as 'low risk' by the banks, then he/she can open a bank account by submitting any one of the following documents:
Identity Card with applicant's photograph issued by Central/State Government Departments, Statutory/Regulatory Authorities, Public Sector Undertakings, Scheduled Commercial Banks and Public Financial Institutions;
Letter issued by a gazette officer, with a duly attested photograph of the person.
How To Update Your KYC In PMJDY Account At SBI:
The online process is quick and easy, does not require you to visit your bank branch.
Step 1: Login into your SBI net banking account.
Step 2: Click on the option 'My Accounts & Profile tab
Step 3: Once the tab opens, click on update KYC option.
Step 4: To take the process ahead, provide your profile password and click on SUBMIT
Step 5: Select the account from the menu, which will be Jan Dhan Account in this case. Click SUBMIT.
Step 6: A new page will appear, where you are required to enter all your latest information and upload relevant documents. Once done, CLICK SUBMIT.
Step 7. An One-Time-Password will be sent to your registered mobile phone number. Enter the OTP and submit. The process of re-KYC is complete!
