LPG New Rules For Owners, Tenants: Can You & Landlord Have Indane, HP, Bharat Gas Connections On Same Address?
In India, the "One Household, One Cooking Gas" rule restricts multiple domestic LPG connections at the same address. However, confusion arises when homeowners rent out a part of their property to tenants who maintain separate households. In such cases, can both have domestic cylinder connections?
One Household, One LPG Connection Rule:

The Government of India has recently amended the Gas Control Order under which only one LPG connection (along with DBC) is permitted in any household consisting of husband, wife, married children and dependant parents living in a dwelling unit having a common kitchen. Thus, multiple LPG connections in a household are now totally forbidden, as per HPCL's circular on One Household, One Connection rule.
As per the circular, holding multiple LPG connections also block the release of new connections to other needy families, who otherwise resort to using non-eco-friendly fuels, thus harming the environment.
Hence, customers having more than one LPG connection in their homes are hereby advised to surrender multiple connections, if any, immediately. If you are left with only a single-cylinder connection after surrendering the other connection(s), an option will be available to you for converting the same into DBC (Double Bottle Connection).
The rule also requires customers with PNG connections or reticulate LPG connections to surrender their LPG connections immediately.
And wherever PNG connections are already exist, the new rule requires you to switch to PNG, surrender your LPG connection and be forbidden from applying for a new LPG connection.
If you have two LPG connections on the same address, you are required to reach out to your local LPG distributor and submit your extra LPG connection.
So what happens to tenants and homeowners on same address?
The tenants and homeowners can have two separate LPG connections on the same address after proving that they have separate kitchens and are all living as independent households on the same address.
As the rule is that one single household is allowed to have only an LPG connection, either Indane Gas, HP Gas and Bharat Gas, if tenants and homeowners have two separate kitchens, they are eligible to keep their own respective connections.
If you have two separate families with their own kitchens, reach out to your LPG distributor and describe your circumstances. You will likely need to provide individual household declarations, complete KYC verification, and furnish proof of address. The distributor will then assess whether you meet the requirements for an additional connection, as per NoBroker report.
What documents might tenants need for Indane Gas, HP Gas, Bharat Gas?
Identity proof, such as Aadhaar or another accepted document.
2. Address proof, such as a registered rent or leave-and-licence agreement.
3. Completed KYC documents.
4. - Evidence that the landlord and tenant maintain separate households, if requested by the distributor.
Conclusion: Separate connections to tenants and homeowners is allowed on same address if they have two separate kitchens. An extra connection is not given just because you stay in different room in the house. A separate kitchen is important.
If you stay on different floors of the same address, you are still eligible for applying for separate LPG connection.
In case two generations of the same family lives separately on the same address but has only one kitchen, they can apply for a double-bottle connection or create a separate kitchen.
