Next Leap For Digi Yatra: SITA President Announces Digi Yatra To Go Global; What Does This Mean For India?

Digi Yatra, the facial recognition-based check-in service at airports, may soon be extended beyond domestic boundaries. Sumesh Patel, President of Asia-Pacific at SITA, the European IT company tasked with implementing this innovative technology, announced that such an expansion would significantly improve convenience and optimize travel processes across India's aviation landscape.

Digi Yatra, launched in December 2022 by former Union Civil Aviation Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia, has already shown promise in enhancing the efficiency of domestic travel. The system allows passengers to use facial recognition technology for a smoother check-in and boarding experience. With SITA winning a contract to implement Digi Yatra at 40 Airports Authority of India (AAI)-owned airports last December, the groundwork for a nationwide rollout is well underway.

Patel emphasized that extending Digi Yatra to international passengers would not only streamline travel processes but also provide a seamless and personalized journey. "The implementation of Digi Yatra for international passengers could prove to be beneficial in enhancing the overall travel experience and optimizing the travel process in India," he said. "By extending this digital platform to international travellers, it will not only improve efficiency and convenience but also support a seamless and personalized travel journey."

For Digi Yatra to be effectively implemented for international passengers, several critical steps need to be taken. These include establishing a robust communication infrastructure, ensuring stringent cybersecurity protocols, and safeguarding passenger data confidentiality. Collaboration among airlines, airports, and government authorities will be essential to provide a secure and efficient digital travel experience for all passengers.

Patel noted, "Integrating Digi Yatra for international passengers will not only streamline the check-in and boarding processes but also provide a more convenient and hassle-free travel experience. It will ultimately pave the way for a more modern and digitally driven travel industry that caters to the needs of both domestic and international travellers."

The Indian government has been focused on digitizing airport operations. Union Home Minister Amit Shah recently inaugurated the Fast Track Immigration - Trusted Traveller Programme (FTI-TTP) at Terminal 3 of Delhi Airport. This initiative, designed to provide Indian nationals and OCI cardholders with a faster, easier, and more secure travel experience, aligns perfectly with the vision for a digitally integrated aviation ecosystem.

Under the FTI-TTP, applicants are required to submit their biometrics (fingerprints and facial image) along with other necessary information as specified in the online application form. Registration is completed after verifications and confirmation of eligibility, further streamlining the travel process for frequent flyers.

Patel highlighted the potential of biometrics-based touchpoints beyond check-in and boarding. "The government's next focus should be on adding biometrics-based touch points. Digitizing immigration procedures at airports using biometric technology will enhance the ease of travel for international passengers and streamline the entire process," he said. "By implementing biometrics-based self-service, duty-free shopping, and lounge access, the government can further enhance the passenger experience. Additionally, using artificial intelligence to optimize operations and enhance security measures should also be high on the agenda."

SITA's ambitions for enhancing travel in India extend beyond airports. The company is working with immigration, maritime, and railway industries to provide a seamless travel experience across various modes of transportation. Patel explained, "Intermodal travel is a key focus for SITA in India. By bringing together different transportation modes and leveraging our expertise in aviation technology, we aim to enhance the overall travel experience for passengers in India."

This vision for intermodal travel is set to transform how passengers move within and across borders, making travel more integrated and efficient. The synergy between different transportation modes and advanced technology will undoubtedly redefine the future of travel in India.
