How Petrol, Diesel Prices Are Calculated In India:
Indian oil marketing companies like HPCL, Indian Oil and BPCL decide the petrol and diesel prices in India. They take into consideration a host of factors. These are:
1. Crude oil prices movement
2. Freight cost
3. Import charges
4. 'Refinery Transfer Price' is imposed for processing crude oil into fuel.
5. Excise Duty which is imposed by central government.
6. Value Added Tax (VAT) which varies state-wise and decided by state governments.
7. Dealers commission is also added to the tally.
After taking into consideration the above factor, the final fuel prices is than passed onto consumers.
However, it needs to be noted that OMCs have started to hike fuel prices after nearly a four-year gap. They did not revise fuel prices since April 2022 even when the Russia-Ukraine war pushed crude oil prices to $150 per barrel mark.
However, the shutdown of the Strait of Hormuz for the third month straight, along with the dual blockade, is expected to have a more severe and long-term impact on global energy. Hence, countries, including India are pushed to hike their fuel prices.
Currently, crude oil prices have dropped by nearly 6% on May 25. US WTI Crude price is above $91 per barrel and Brent crude is near 98 per barrel.
