PhonePe Launches ‘On-The-Go’ Card: What Is It? How To Use The RuPay Card? All You Need To Know

Fintech firm PhonePe, on Monday, March 9, launched 'RuPay On-The-Go' card to simplify transit payment across India. The RuPay smart card would let users make quick payments linked to travel-related transactions on all NCMC-enabled services like metros, buses, trains, tolls and parking across India.

The PhonePe 'On-The-Go' card also works without internet and network connectivity. Here are all the details related to the smart card.

What is PhonePe's 'On-The-Go' RuPay Card?

It is a RuPay smart card that works uses prepaid, stored-value model where the balance is stored directly on the card's chip.

How Does The RuPay Smart Card Work?

The smart card enables true offline contactless payments, which would let commuters to tap-and-pay even in areas with no internet connectivity. The smart card owners can load the card with a balance of up to Rs 2,000, with a maximum offline transaction limit of Rs 500.

PhonePe 'On-The-Go' Smart Card Key Features

-The NCMC card allows users to make payments with the one-tap facility while travelling on public transport across India. However, they can make transactions in public transport that accepts the NCMC card payment.

-The smart card works without the need for internet connectivity.
-The card utilises a prepaid, stored-value model where the balance is stored directly on the card's chip. The model enables true offline contactless payments.
-The smart card service is initially focused on the Hyderabad Metro, in partnership with L&T Metro Rail (Hyderabad) Limited (LTMRHL) with plans to expand the offering by integrating with additional transit providers across the nation.
-People can purchase the smart card at Hyderabad Metro ticket counters and activate the same with a one-time password (OTP).

As per PhonePe's press release, though the smart card is issued in Hyderabad as of now, it is fully interoperable across the country and can be used and recharged at any NCMC-enabled public transport stations across India.

"This card enables quick 'Tap-and-Pay' transactions at transit providers across the country. It works without the need for internet connectivity via a balance present on the card. It is our first step in integrating our digital wallet ecosystem with national public transport, delivering a secure experience for every commuter and furthering the foundation for national interoperability on the back of the NCMC framework powered by RuPay," stated Deep Agrawal, Head of Payments at PhonePe.
