Punjab National Bank Alert: PNB Shuts Inactive Zero-Balance Accounts; Know How To Reactivate? Check KYC Rules

Punjab National Bank (PNB) began closing certain inactive bank accounts after the April 16 deadline, following its earlier advisory to customers to update KYC details and activate dormant accounts. The move comes as part of the bank's efforts to improve security and reduce the risk of fraud linked to unused accounts.

PNB Closes Inactive Accounts; Check If Your Bank Account Is Affected

PNB earlier issued a warning on March 18, asking customers to take immediate action. With the deadline now passed, accounts that did not meet compliance requirements are being deactivated or closed, potentially restricting access to funds and banking services.

Which PNB Accounts Have Been Closed?

The bank has clarified that only specific accounts have been impacted by the recent action. Accounts that met all three conditions have been targeted for closure, including those with no customer-initiated transactions for three years or more, a zero account balance, and incomplete or outdated KYC details.

Accounts falling under these criteria have either already been closed or are currently in the process of closure. Customers who did not take action before the deadline may now face limited or no access to such accounts, depending on their status.

What About Dormant Accounts?

PNB has also tightened rules around dormant accounts-those inactive for over two years. While these accounts may still hold funds, many of them have been placed under restrictions such as debit freezes. Customers are required to complete KYC verification to restore full functionality.

According to the bank, inactive and non-compliant accounts pose higher risks of fraud, misuse, and unauthorised transactions. The clean-up drive is aimed at strengthening banking security and ensuring compliance with regulatory norms.

Can Closed Bank Accounts Be Reactivated Now?

Customers whose accounts have already been closed are not entirely out of options, but the process has become more stringent. They will now need to visit their home branch and submit complete KYC documents to request reactivation. Approval will depend on the bank's internal review.

For those who still have restricted or dormant accounts, immediate action is advised:

  • Visit the nearest PNB branch and complete KYC verification
  • Submit valid documents such as Aadhaar, PAN, Voter ID, or Passport along with address proof
  • Carry passbook or debit card for account identification

Alternatively, some users may be able to update KYC through the PNB One mobile app using Aadhaar-based OTP verification, depending on account status.

Please note that account status and applicable actions may vary from case to case. For accurate and updated information, customers are advised to visit their nearest bank branch, contact customer care, or check the official website of the bank.
