More than three years after the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) announced the withdrawal of the Rs 2,000 banknote from circulation, the high-value currency note continues to remain legal tender. While the vast majority of these notes have already made their way back into the banking system, the RBI has reiterated that people who still possess them can continue to deposit or exchange them through its designated Issue Offices.

According to the latest data released by the central bank, the value of Rs 2,000 banknotes in circulation has declined dramatically since the withdrawal announcement in May 2023, reflecting the near-complete return of the denomination to the RBI.

98.47% of Rs 2,000 Notes Have Been Returned to RBI
When the RBI announced the withdrawal of Rs 2,000 banknotes from circulation in May 2023, the total value of these notes in circulation stood at Rs 3.56 lakh crore.
As of April 30, 2026, that figure has fallen sharply to just Rs 5,451 crore, indicating that 98.47% of the Rs 2,000 banknotes have already been returned to the banking system.
The latest figures highlight the significant progress made in the withdrawal exercise, with only a small fraction of the denomination still remaining with the public.
How to Deposit or Exchange Rs 2,000 Banknotes
People who still have Rs 2,000 banknotes can continue to exchange or deposit them through the RBI's 19 Issue Offices located across the country. Individuals can visit any of these offices to either exchange their Rs 2,000 notes or deposit them directly into their bank accounts.

Where and How to Exchange Rs 2,000 Banknotes
People can visit any of these RBI Issue Offices to deposit Rs 2,000 banknotes into their bank accounts or exchange them, subject to the RBI's prevailing guidelines. Those who are unable to visit an office in person can also send the banknotes through India Post from any post office in the country to the nearest RBI Issue Office for credit to their bank account.
Customers can send their Rs 2,000 banknotes through India Post from any post office in the country to an RBI Issue Office. Once the notes are received and verified, the corresponding amount is credited directly to the sender's registered bank account.
This option enables people living in remote areas or those unable to travel to an RBI office to complete the process conveniently.
Rs 2,000 Note Remains Legal Tender
The RBI has once again clarified that the withdrawal of the Rs 2,000 denomination from circulation does not mean the currency has been demonetised.
The Rs 2,000 banknote continues to be recognised as legal tender, meaning it remains a valid currency under Indian law. However, since the denomination has been withdrawn from active circulation, holders are encouraged to deposit or exchange the notes through the RBI's authorised channels.
The central bank has advised the public to rely only on official RBI channels for any information related to the exchange or deposit of Rs 2,000 banknotes and to avoid misinformation regarding the validity of the currency.
