Very few of us know that banks in India including the country's largest state-owned lender State Bank of India (SBI) offer their debit card holders complimentary insurance covers. However, this comes with certain conditions and unless the debit card holder fulfils certain criteria they are not eligible to cover these insurance covers.
SBI's accidental insurance can prove helpful to the family in difficult times. The country's largest government bank SBI provides accidental insurance cover of up to Rs 20 lakh on ATM cards. However, the insurance amount is determined depending on the category of the card. If you also use SBI ATM, then know here's how much accidental cover is given to you on which card.

Personal Accidental Insurance (Death) Non-Air: This insurance covers the Debit Cardholder for non-air accidental death only, to the extent as applicable to the type of Debit Card variant held. This Insurance Cover becomes operational when the Card is used at least once on any channel, viz ATM/Point of Sale/eCommerce during the last 90 days (Financial) from the date of the accident.
Personal Air Accidental Insurance (Death): This insurance covers the Debit Cardholder for air accidental death only, to the extent applicable to the type of Debit Card variant held. This Insurance Cover becomes operational when the Card is used at least once on any channel, viz ATM/Point of Sale/eCommerce during the last 90 days (Financial transaction) from the date of the accident, subject to a condition that the air ticket for that air travel should have been purchased by using the Debit Card.

How to claim Personal Accidental Insurance?
The claimant (s) has to submit Personal Accident Insurance Intimation Form, within 120 days from the date of the accidental death of the Cardholder
The claimant (s) has to submit the documents as per the Documents Check List for Personal Accident Claim along with a Certificate from the Bank's Branch where the Cardholder's account is maintained, confirming the death of the Cardholder, his Account No. and Debit Card No.
The Personal Accident Claim Form duly filled & signed by the claimant in all respects should be submitted within 240 days from the date of death with the above address through speed/registered post/courier/by hand.
The claimant (s) will also have to submit Bank Account Details at the time of settlement of the claim.
All correspondence shall be only between the claimant (s) and National Insurance Company Limited.
Please note that all the documents submitted in the regional language need to be translated to English to avoid delay in the settlement process.
